The needlessly-prolonged inquiry rinto the death of the unfortunate man Evans, who was struck down in self-defence by Constable Wade at Waihi, has ended with the only possible verdict. Everyone sympathises with the friends and relatives of the deceased man, whose resort to murderous methods was directly, due to the mischievous influence of the.Fedoration. The responsibility .for : his death lies altogether at the door of the Federation, which certainly .owes 1 it to the relatives of Evans to ; do whatever it can to make restitution. Ever since the shooting affray, and even during the inquest, it has been the chief concern of the Federationists to represent that Evans was murdered, and murdered at the instigation of the Federation's opponents. There never was ,the smallest chance that any success would attend these attempts to misrepresent the very clear and simple facts of. the case, and the summing-up of_ the Coroner and the finding, of the jury will be accepted by everybody as the last word of an unfortunate chapter. We wish we could think that it would mark also the end of the incendiary doctrines with, which the Federation demagogues have_ eo i sadly misled so many trades-unionists. The railway returns for; the Jour weeks of November 9 and the ithirtytwo. weeks of tho financial.! year are given in the current Gazette,' and they make rather disagreeable reading. The following tablo gives. the net revenue from the Northern and Southern systems for the fourweekly period, together with the corresponding figures for last year:— • 1911-12. 1912-13. North 52,282 41,001 South 2G.894 24,853 The Southern lines are still hopelessly inferior to the Northern lines in paying power. When we compare' I the returns for the 32 weeks of the current year with those for the corresponding 32 weeks of 1911, wo find that there has actually been a shrinkage of net -revenue. Here are the figures:— 1911-12. 1912-18. Decrease. North' 881,145 856,517 . 4,628 South 830,934 325,754 5,180 Total ... 692,079 682,271 9,808 Every year a very large addition is made to the capital sunk in the railways—the annual average is far more than a million for recent years—and a consequent addition is made to the interest bill. Usually the net revenue , increases, although it has not ever increase'd so as to meet tho interest bill; but this year there is an actual shrinkage on 32 weeks' running. The sooner the Government secure the services of their new railway manager and have the system thoroughly overhauled the better. A Press Association message from Christchurch states that Madame Kirkby Lunn gov© her first concert in. that city on Saturday night, when a very large audience was present. Madame Lumi was in splendid voice and had a gTeo,t reception, every item being encored. LIGHT CARS FOB COMMEECIAL TRAVELLERS.
