Howl, Babylon! Howl, Babylon! Verily in Australia shall tho year 1912 bo known as Ichabod! The Leopards of England hold tho ashes; Arnst left tho sculling championship in tho Thames; now the Davis Cup has gone. Tho returned bowlers explain, it was hospitality that spoiled their record, and tho rotundity of some of tho bowlers gives a sniff of truth to tho statement. Wo haven' got much more to lose, and, we shall probably lose even that.—Sydney "Bulletin."

Local Men's Matches. Saturday gladdened tho hearts of tennis players by being fine, although there was a nasty wind blowing that interfered with the play at times. No matches wero played,in the men's senior grade. In the junior grade Victoria College and Trinity had a close contest, victory going to the former team by one set, tho difference in games being only two. Brougham Hill had a comfortable win over Rona Bay. For tho losers Lewis did. well, defeating Veen in.two sets straight. Victoria College A also had a tight "go," and, strange to 6ay, their victory over Wellington was also achieved by the narrow margin of one set, though Wellington won the greater number of games. ' Newtown and Jobisonville had saw wins over Kilbirnie and Karori respectively.

Play in the Ladies' Grades. In the ladies' senior grade Wellington once more had no difficulty in winning from their opponents, who this time proved to.be their second team... Their victory was a sweeping one, and looks rather ghastly on paper, but no doubt the second team enjoyed the practice, even' if the first team did not.

Victoria College defeated Brougham Hill by two sets. Save in two or three sets, this.match was keenly contested, and some of ''the "sets were neck, and neck. Miss Davis played well aga*inst Miss Van Staveren, but the latter showed' great judgment, and made few mistakes. Miss Atniore, whose style has much improved 6ince last season, had an easy win from Mrs. W. G. Howe. Mrs. Morgan showed good form, and her cut drive came off to advantage on the grass, and though Mrs. Tennant played well, she was unable to take a set. The contest between Misses Archer and Macintosh was long drawn out. -The former, 'after losing T;he first set rather easily, played steadily, and secured the next two sets/ Tho double between Misses Van Staveren and Macintosh and Misses Davis and Archer was full of interest. The former pair led s—l.buttheßroueham Hill players were not daunted, and fought on steadily, and took the set at 6—5. This score, was reversed in the second set. In the third set Misses Davis and Archer, securing a good lead, made few mistakes, and took this set at 6-2.

The School Championships. It was a bright scene that presented itself on Tuesday afternoon at the Brougham Hill courts, when the finals of the school competitions were fought out. The eagerness of the children was something to watch, while their best sporting instincts were over to tho fore.

The final of the boys' doubles provided some good tennis, and 'two very small boys, Atkinson and Bates, came home winners, having secured a well-merited victory,

Quite the best game of the day was the final of the eirls' singles, between D. Leslie and F. Fear.!. Both girls played well, though the latter has the better style, and she certainly exhibited, an amount of pluck that would have been creditable to a much older player. At one time her opponent had a good lead, but she played on steadily, and 29 all was reached. Here the game was closely contested, and after three deuces had been called, Miss Leslie carried off the victory at A win to be proud of.

B.H. Ladies' Singles. The ladies' handicap singles at Brougham Hill has been won by Miss Primmer (12), who showed good form throughout. She had a good win in the final from Mrs. Archer (scr.), who caught her at 32 all. At this stage Miss Plimmer played remarkably well, and earned off the match at 40-35, thus scoring 8 points to her opponents' three at a critical stage. This was a very creditable performance, indeed. Civil Service Tournament. The final of the men's singles was won by E. F. Beeves (12), of the Public Trust Office, who defeated F. 'Williams (30), 50—46. Reeves is playing right on top of his form just now, and is displaying considerable promise for the future. Partnered by 0. W. Bamfield, he was also successful in carrying off the doubles.
