DISCHARGED PRISONERS' AID SOCIETY.

A meeting of tho Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society was held in Dr., Jl'Arthiir's room, Magistrate's Court, on Thursday, Dr. M'Arthur presiding. There were also present: Mrs. H. R. Richmond, Messrs. E. Arnold, T: S. Lambert and B. Cumings. An apology was received from Sir Robert Stout. The report showed that during the last 16 wosks 198 prisoners have had interviews with the executive officers of the society. The cases have been reviewed and help has been given in various ways to 91. The range of help that is asked for is from a fare to Auckland to a night's lodging. A member incidentally mentioned that it would be advisable if the Government could send Dr. M'Arthur to Pakatoa to make a full and exhaustive report on all the conditions existing there. "It would have to be a surpris3 visit"' Mr. B. Arnold lias obtained permission from the Minister for Justice to carry out at the' Wellington Gaol on Christmas Day a programme of musical entertainment. The meeting passed a resolution to augment it with the usual gift of. fruit, and also to provide some six wives of prisoners with Christmas cheer. A vote of thanks to Mr. E. Arnold for his increasing energy in all. matters appertaining to the, prisoners, was expressed by Dr. M'Arthur and endorsed by those present.
