By wireless last evening the New Zealand Shipping dj.'s R.M.S.' Ruapehul advised that she was expeeted to arrivo at »i ellington from London,' via way ports, lato to-night. The liner will berth at the Queen's Wharf to land- her passengers firct thing on' Sunday - morning. Two oversea vessels, in addition to the Ruapehu, 'aro. .due at. Wellington, to-day. They are' the A.-: and A. Lino's chartered Btoamer. Anglo-Mexican from New York, via Auckland, and the New Zealand Shinping Oo.'s Wakaiiu', from Montreal, via way porta. The latter vessel is expected to clear for Lyttelton on Monday. Beforo she left "Wellington for Sydney at 5.25 p.m. yesterday, the .-Union Company's steamer Jtaeraki disehivrgod the following cargo'at thisport:—2io bags rice, 50 cases ivine, 21)) bags onions, 460 bags super* phosphates. 30 caees oii, 20 cases grease, 25) case's cherries, and IGO bags bark. On her next trip from Sydney to Auckland the Maheno will. run one day early in conpcQticnco of the' holidays. She will leave Sydney on Tuesday, December 2-1, and- will arrive at. Auckland, the following Saturday instead of Sunday. She will leave th« northern port on Monday, December 30, as usual. MAHENO'S EXPECTED ARRIVAL. A wireless message received from the intercolonial steamer Maheno laet evening stated that .the versei expected, to arrivo. at Auckland from Sydney, at ,3 p.m. to-morrow. •'/ ' THE HAICCSIiIKA MARU. Moots. A. H." Nathan, Limited, Auckland, adviso that the Japanese steamer Hakushika Maru.is expected to leave Sydney to-day for Auckland, in continuation of her voyage: from Japan.'. The vessel is due here about December 20, and has on board about 2MO • tons of superphosphatee and sulphur for this port. The HakushikaMaru will probably complete; her discharge at Napier, Lyttelton, Tlma.ru, and the Bluff. According to a southern exchange, the Hakushiloa Maru, before coming on to New Zealand ports to discharge her cargo of superphosphates from Japan, :will load KOO tons 1 of coal, at Newcastle for Timaru. which will probably bo her first port of call. HOW A VESSEL FOUNDERS. Although it is, unfortunately, too often that a fine vessel will founder at sea, it seldom happona that there are eye-wit-nesses to the occurrence other than those members of the crew, who. in the excitement of the moment, are so perturbed or overbalanced that they are seldom able to give a coherent nccount of the affair subsequently. When the Japanese steamer Unegako Maru sank in ' a typhoon in Eastern waters a few weeks ago,, it happened that the Blue : Funnel Eteamer Priam was in the vicinity, ■, so in this case it is possible to gather "a.fair idea of what such a. disaster is like, for. thoi'o were' a num.ber. of persons on 'board who witnessed the whole affair. Referring l to the ineidont, one person who wan Watching'the pinking vessel stated fully two hours elanred from the moment' she pot . into, difficulties until the end. This, of. opurpe, allowed rescue work being carried out. Continuing bis story, the spectator, stated: "When the steamer wa* on her. beam-end the water had reached her funnel" and ventilators. She seemed to hang a little, and at first I thought she would • remain in that posi-< Hon, but the weight below was too great, for after a moment or so a'l at once she slid from view. with a rumbling sound, leaving only ■ the- upper parts of three of her starboard lifoboats. sticking, in an uncanny; manner out. of the water. Vhiile eflie went ' down, as the water encroached on a fresh section, huge fountains of spray would shoot up a great distance from some rent in the deck or other rent, and it was a most weird sight to hear and see rows of portholes toward the bow going off with a bang like a small cannon, and shooting forth a roray of wnter as though she was tiring a broadside from so many guns. A large nuantity of steam and snray boiled about her funnels as she disappeared, ithe absence of any big explosions doubtless being -due to the fact that there was no head of steam on at the time, although. I. imagine she .had some fires beneath, because smoke.'waS'ißsuing from ouo of tho funnels. .1 The eoot which was shot from them by the rush of oir and water, lay on the' water' like a pall long after she had gone." ' SUCCESSFUL DARTFORD BOTS. At recent examinations' hold at Wellington, in connection with certificates of oompetenoy for foreign-going mates' certificates, threo cadets, who wero trained on the Union Company's Dartford were candidate for second officers' tickets. According to the examiner (Captain Blackburne) the lada passed the examination very creditably. Captain Blackburne stated that the manner in whioh the cadets handled their papers reflected credit on Captain M'Donold and. the offloers of the Dartford. The names of tho successful cadets are:—R. H. Baigent, Norman B. Hazard, Alox. 8. Adam, and A. G. M. Ohristfe, one-of the cadets who passed the neceea/ry examination at Lyttelton. During tho next week or so four or Ave more cadets will sit for their oecond offloers' certificates in, other ports of New Zealand, A NEW SCOW. Another addition to the trading fleet of Auckland has just been made in the eJiape of tho now scow Onerahi, which has been built to the order...of Captain G. Carey by Ml-. D. M. Darroch, of Little Omaha. The Onerahi is a strongly-built vessel, ketch ri'gged, and. capable of carrying about 80 tons dead-weight on a draught of 4ft.
