MASTERTON NOTES.
(Prom Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, December IS. A sitting of the Ikaroa Maori Land Board was hold here to-day, when a number of leases were dealt with. The attendance at the Masterton District High School has been affected during the last few weeks by an outbreak of scarlatina. Mr. E. Brown presided over the- monthly meeting of tho Masterton District High School Committee, which was held last, evening. Tho treasurer reported a credit . balance of .£33 4s. 6d. Votes of appreciation were passed to Messrs. R. C. Fowler and H. G. Williams for donations to tho school library and museum. Two events were run in connection with tho Masterton Cycling Club on the Park Oval last evening. The. two-mile eenior handicap was won' by H. Crawler, and the junior-handicap of one milo by F. Ackennan. The Victorian cricketers are to be accorded a civic reception here at 11.30 on Wednesday next. They will afterwards be entertained at luncheon. Two cricket matches were played m connection with the Thursday Association yesterday. The Carterton "B" team defeated the Masterton Athletic team on the Park Oval, and Carterton "A" proved too good for the Masterton hockey team. Carterton is now leading for tho championship. The ltev. A. T. Thompson, 8.A., leaves for Sydney to-day. He is an applicant for tho pastorship of St. Peter's Church, in that city, and has been invited to preach trial sermons. Ho will bo absent for about four weeks. Mr. Evelyn Wienoh, organiser for the Overseas Club, will visit Masterton on December 30, and address a public meeting here. The Booth Cup competition match, played on the local green yesterday between the Masterton and Greytown Clubs, resulted in an easy win for the former, the scores being 77 points to 38. Shearing is now well advanced in the district, the past week having been ideal weather. Wool is pouring in to the local railway station, and the railway staff is kept very bus}-. ' •Mr. William L. James, late of Wellington, was married in Knox Church yesterday to Edith Emma, second daughter of Mr. W. Hoxton. Tho ceremony was performed by the Eev. A. T. Thompson. Mr. D. Welch- won the 6G yards swimming event, which was held on the Park lake yesterd .y, in. connection with the Masterton Swimming Club. The time occupied was GGsec Tho seventh successive summer day, and the hottest of them all.
