At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Fergus James Adams was convicted of the theft of a purse, a trinket, and lis. 6d. in money (the total value of which was lis.), belonging to Bessie Slaughter. It was stated that Miss Slaughter, a singer at present engaged at the Theatre' Royal, lost the property mentioned from the Commercial Hotel, where she was staying. Defendant was a porter at the hotel. Ho was convicted and ordered to. appear for sentence when called on, and his father w.as required to make good the loss. DID HE WAGER? In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Arthur New was charged with, being a bookmaker, having betted, on Plimmer's Steps with Thomas Winn. The charge was made on the information of Detective-Sergeant ,j... J.. Cassells, of . Mount Cook, Station.' Defendant was remanded till December 18. . . THE STOWAWAY. Frederick Nelson Watts,, who stowed away on the steamer Manuka, on its voyage from Sydney to Wellington, was fined £a, in default two weeks' imprisonment. Watts said that he had been carried off by the vessel while aboard. looking for. a friend. DISOBEDIENT FIREMAN. C. T. Duncan, a fireman on ; the steamer Manuka, was fined £1 for having disobeyed a command from the third officer. OTHER POLICE CASES. Elizabeth Ward (alias Gillise) admitted having importuned men in Vivian Street. She was sent to the Salvation Army Home for six-, months. / ■For insobriety Frederick Chick, was ordered to-pay. 175...6 d..in expenses.
