HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

IFrom Oct Snecial CorresnondenU TOMATO MEN LEAN ON THE STATE. A large meeting of tomato growers was held at Epuni Hamlet, Lower Hutt, last evening, for the purpose of considering measures to combat diseases in tomatoes in the Hutt Valley. Mr. T. M. AVilford occupied the chair, and called upon Mr. C. Howard, convenor of the meeting, to state his views. Mr. Howard said that tomato growers were "hard up against it." What was wanted was an association, and a deputation to the Government. After a lengthy discussion, Mr. Brassel moved, and Mr. Howard seconded, the following resolution:—"As tho successful growing of tomatoes is of .great importance to tho growers in New Zealand and the public, this meeting if of opinion that the time has arrived when the Government should be approached, and requested to establish an experimental glass house, for the growing of tomatoes and field experiments, so that tho various diseases affecting them may be watched and controlled, and eventually destroyed; andthat the Government be requested to communicate with countries in order to discover a remedy." It was further resolved to form an association, and to wait upon the Minister to-day, if possible, and place the matter before him.
