NEW MUSEUM ANNEXE.

STATEMENT BY THE DIRECTOR. An addition has been made to the musucm premises in the shape of a corrugated iron shed. (40ft. by 60ft.), which has been erected on that valuable and central site on the corner of Museum and Sydney Streets. The place is merely a tin shed with an asphalt floor, and will be used a 9 a store only, for it is impossible to make any show of the valuable collections of curiosities for which there is at the present time no show-room accommodation. As tho old brick building in. tho Parliamentary grounds in Sydney Street has to corao down shortly, in connection with the rearrangement of the ground levels in that quarter, the Sir Walter Buller collection of Maori carvings, carved houses, patikas, etc., which have been stored there, will be transferred in their boxes to tho new shed.

"It seems curious," said Mr. A. Hamilton, Director of the Dominion Museum, "that we have to transfer these things from an old building which is practically fireproof to a new one that is not. The carvings are very valuable, and if lost could not be replaced. The proposal of the Minister that the museum is to be located in the old Parliamentary Buildings appears to put the question of new premises back for at least another six years, as' the first contract to be let in connection with the new Parliamentary Buildings does not include the library and accommodation for tho other people now in that building. Tho old building is a fine one, but as it is at present is hardly suitable for a museum on account of the indifferent lighting and the number of internal rooms. Tho windows on tho south side arc mere slits, whereas nearly the whole side would want to bo windows to make the interior light enough for museum purposes. It is also suggested that the present upstairs library room would make a fine place for an art gallery, but it would need a good top-light and an extension of tho window spaces before it would bo effective for pictureviewing."
