PERSONAL ITEMS.

The Prime Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey), the Hon. J. Allen, and the Hon. R. H.* Rhodes return to Wellington from Christchurch this morning. Tho Hon. H. D. Bell leaves for Dunedin to-night, and the Hon. A. L. Herdman arrives to-mor-row from the north. All the Ministers in town, with the exception of the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, who has another engagement, will be present at the banquet to the Hon. J. Allen in the evening at the Hotel Windsor. It is announced that oyer 100 guests have signified. their intention of being present. The committee wish it to be understood that evening dress is to be worn, and not uniform.

The "Wairarapa Daily Times" states that Mr. W. C. Buchanan; (MiP., is leaving on Friday next on a visit to the Old Country. He hopes to be 'back in New Zealand in time for the opening of Parliament. It., is over twenty years since Mr. Buchanan previously,., visited the Homeland. Ho is to be tendered a farewell "social" at Greytown on Wednesday evening.

Among the list of passengers for New Zealand by tho Malwa cabled from Melbourne last evening was the name of Colonel Robin. Inquiry elicited the information (hat the officer in question is not Colonel A. W, Robin, C.8., of the New Zoaland Defence Force, who is still attached to the Colonial Department of the War Office, London.

Mr. Reynolds Denniston, the theatrical manager, late of the Plimmer-Denniston Company, will arrive in Wellington from Sydnoy by the Manuka this morning. Mr. Denniston, who is accompanied by his wife, is on a visit to his relatives, who reside in Dunedin.

Messrs. Donald MT/ean and P. C. Watt, of Wellington, two. builders who recently returned from the Old Country, were entertained by the Builders' Association, at the close of the monthly meeting last evening. Both gentlemen were given a hearty welcome home.

Bishop Crossley, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, arrives in Wellington by the Maori from South this morning.

; Mr. Willis, Speaker of the New South Wales Parliament, intends spending the whole of next January in touring New Zealand.

Mr. A. S. M. Poison, headmaster of the Napier Boys' High School, who is leaving very shortly to take up tho position of principal of Ballarat College, Victoria, was the recipient on Monday of two presentations, one the pupils .at the High School, consisting of a case of silver fish knives and forks, a case of fruit knives and forks, and a handsome oak biscuit barrel; the other, from the masters, being a handsome spirit stand. The presentation from the boys was inscribed: ''Presented to Mr. and • Mrs. A. S. M. Poison by the Napier High School boys. December, 1912." Eulogistic speeches were made by those entrusted with the honour of handing over the gifts, and in each case Mr. Poison feelingly responded.

The following, appointments were made at yesterday's mosting of tho Wellington Education Board:—Te Aro (assistant-mss-ter), Mr. B. Kean; Kaiwaiwai (head teacher), .Mr. J. Williams; Wallacoville (sole teacher), Miss E. M. Johnson; Rosoneath (assistant), Miss K. Taskor; Makairo (sole teacher), Miss M. Power; South Wellington (assistant mistress), Miss V. Ham; Worser Bay (assistant), Miss M. Duff; ICoputaroa (assistant mistress), Miss E. Wiesner; Shannon (assistant mistress), Miss M. Hughes; Huia Road, (sole teacher), Miss' D. Peaks; ■ Newman- (ossistant mistress), Miss M. Kydd.

The death occurred on Monday of Mr. William Edwards,-a resident of Croydon Bush for the last thirty-one years, and a colonist for sixty-nine years. _ Deceased (states a Gore Press Association telegram) was 89 years old, and arrived in Auckland in 1841. In tho early 'sixties he took part in the Otago goldfields rush. Subsequently ho went to tho Goro district in ISBI. He leaves a widow, four sons and four daughters.

Tho following resignations were received at the meeting of the Education Beard yesterday:—Mr. J. Young, Solo teacher at Akitio; Miss E. .T. Haslam, assistant at Muritai;' and Miss G. Flux, assistant at Epuni.

: Lieutenants Dasent and Hill, of H.M.S. Drake, who havo been staying for a few days at Makara House, Waiknnae, returned t<S town last evening, after spending an'excellent timo trout fishing.

A pioneer settler, Mr. William Cornford, passed away at his residence, Johnsonvillo, at an early hour yesterday morning, after a short illness-, at tho rips ago of eighly-fivo years. Deceased was born in Maidstone, Kent, and came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Lord William Bontinck, arriving in Wellington in 1841. Ho settled in Karori, and afterwards removed to Makara with liis wife- and family of five daughters and four sons, but removed to Johnsonville some six years ago. He leaves a widow and a family of eight, and many grandchildren.
