The local agents, for the Shaw, Savill, and-Albion Company have been . advised that R.M.B. Gorinthic left Plymouth for ■Wellington, via way ports, on December 7. She'is due.at Wellington on January 21. R.M.S.ATHENIO LEAVES THE CAPE. R.M.S.. Athenic continued her journey from Cape Town: to Hobart on Sunday ovouing, December 8. The liner is due at this port on December 31. THE 'MARATHON. Since the last' occasion on which the steamer Marathon visited Australia' 6he has undergone coneddcrablo alterations, •which have attracted a good deal of attention in the shipping world. Her tonnage has been increased by about 1300 tons, maki7ig lier 6000 gross register, to effect which' an act'in ship surgery has been carried out.' The steamer was cut in half just ,aft of" thei bridge,' and a further 50 feet has been added toiler length.;-The vessel lias also'been ; giyen a second.funnel, and this .somewhat enhances her appearance. Certain improvements have also been carried out in the internal arrangements, several' notable features being added to the saloon accommodation. A lounge-has-been furnished on the. bridge deck, while on the same deck ladies' and men's bathrooms have been, fitted, in addition to' some single berth rooms. Additional single berth rooms have also been erected on the awning deck, immediately under the bridge deck, while on this deck several bibby rooms, whioh. are now popular with travellers, have also been ■ arranged. Additions to the third-class accommodation have also been made. It is cxpectod that the Marathon Will fully maintain the name whioh was won amongst travellers since she was built for the Aberdeen Line a few years ago. The outward voyage has been most successful, the run from London, to Sydney, including the. time spent at port's of call, occupying 43 days. The Milttiades, which is a sister shin of the Marathon, is now in the builders' bands undergoing similar alterations. . MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. ' ,- Oaptain H. E. Hill, perhaps the oldest shipmaster on the Australian coast, who recently resigned from the position of Marino Superintendent ■■ of the Melbourne Shipping Company, was presented with a puree of sovereigns and an address from the employees of the company at Melbourne last week. Captain Hill's connec-. tion with the sea • has been a long one, and ho is well known in Now Zealand. He was master in the employ of,. Captain Williams in New Zealand forty years ago, and when the Union Ship Company acquired the shipping business of his- employer, Captain Hill went with his ship. After several years with the 'Union ComSany, Captain Hill joined the Wellington arbour Board as pilot, and subsequently entered the service of the Melbourne Shipping Company, taking command of' all its vessels with the exception of the latest addition. He was for Ave years marine superintendent for the company. Oaptain J. O. Watson, of the Union Company's service, is ashore suffering from a sovero attack of influenza and laryngitis. He will be confined to his bed for at least a fortnight.. . , Mr. P. Williamson has joined the Whangapo as second engineer. Captain W. S. Gordon, of Storm, has taken charge of the Potone. in place of Captain J. B. Allsop, who has been granted holiday leave. 'Captain' Radford has taken charge of the Storm. Captain Probcrt. of tho Giebornc Harbour Board's dredge Maui, who has been on holiday leave in Australia,'returned to Now Zealand on Sunday last. Mr. F.' Q. Kcmn, mate of tho Mangapapa, came ashore this trip at Wellington, and was relieved by Mr. 0. Vendorc. Captain J. M'Koniie; late of the Rosamond, has joined the Ilaupiri, in pla<*3 of Oaptain Irwin, who has gone south to take charge of the Poherua. ... Alter putting out Now York cargo at Duncdin, the Tyser liner Niwaru will proceed to Australia, to load for Home. H.M.S.' Drako is expected to leave Wellington for Sydney at 6 p.m. to-day. The Shaw, Savill steamer Kumara, which is under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived at Melbourne from Montreal on Docomb-er 7. She b due about January 4. The southern passengers on board tho F. and H. bine's Nairn-shire, duo at Auckland from Liverpool to-morrow, will bo transhipped to coastal steamers at the northern port. The Union Company's Kowh.il is due at Wellington- to load transhipments for-New Plymouth to-morrow. Continuing her journey from Greymouth, tho Arahura left W-estport for Nelson, Picton, and Wellington at 8 p.m. yesterday; The vessel is expected to arrive here between 9 and 10 o'clock this evening. The Kra-ow, which is duo fit Wellington from Afetport this morning, will bo dispatched for Newcastle either to-morrow or on Friday. When the discharge of the cargo of pino brought from Havclock, N.Z., is completed the little barquo Daniel will leave Sydney for the Cla.renre H-ivcr, whero a shipment of hardwood will be loaded for tho Bluff. 'The Victorian Government has accepted the tender of the Mort's Dock and Engineering Company, Ltd., Sydney, to build a dredge for use in channel work. Tho dredge will be built from the Victorian design, and is to cost £65,CC0. The Monowad, leaving Wellington for northern ports on December 25, will proceed to Gisborne direct. , The New Zealand Shipping Company's cargo carrier O'taki left Wellington last evening to commence Homeward loading at Nelson to-day. Tho Government steamer Hinemoa. hae arrived back at Wellington from her visit of inspection of northern lighthouses. .At 2 p.m. the vessel left with a party of exports and others to inspect TerawMti, Tongue Point, and Karori Eock, with a view of erecting a lighthouse in the- vicinity of those places. Tho Hinemoa arrived back at Wellington last evening. The Mapourika is scheduled to leave Wellington for Nelson and West Coast ports at 4 p.m. to-day. The New Zealand Shipping Company's mail 6teamer Ruapehu. wast to have left Hobart for Wellington at noon, yesterday. Tht= should make the liner arrive in port on evening. Noon to-morrow is the time appointed for the New Zealand Shipping Comwi-ny's Rotoma to leave Wellington for London, via "way-porta. -She is due at her destination on January 23.
