A conference of those interested in the boot and leather industries is to be held in Wellington on' January 14 to consider the position created by the; high : prices ruling for hides.and the. probable ■ increase in the price of leather. It is understood American jhuyers have been outbidding the local -tanners for hides, with the result that noiv the market shows a shortage. Prices here are a penny higher than in London. It is possible that; local industries will ask; for the imposition of an' export duty. ,;,- -
BODY RECOVERED. Auckland, December 8. The body of Louis Neale,. who was drowned whilst bathing off Waihoke Island on, Sunday last, was recovered yesterday.: .'.'.' .. .. ■■ CHARGE OF PILLAGE, ' "'.'' Auckland, December 8. In .consequence of reported pillaging from the Mokoia, when the vessel was in port on November. 23, the police have arTested a seaman named Frederick Ryder on a .charge of having stolen a book from a passenger's portmanteau. A wharf labourer; named Henry Ferguson Clarke was also arrested in connection'with'the same offence. The allegation is that Clarke rippsd open the passenger's trunk, took out o'.medical book, valued at 3s. 6d., and handed it ''to-Ryder.' Yesterday the two were charged with the offence, and also with having! stolen five dozen pairs of eocks, valued at over £3; the property of Archibald Clark, Ltd. The police stated that probably «veral more charges would be preferred,' and. accused were remanded.
