OTAKI NOTES,

The monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at Otaki on Friday, when iseveral civil cases were awarded By default. For a breach of the.'licensing laws, John Driscoll was fined 10s. ana costs. 155., while Thomas Clark, for failing to obey an order under the D.estituto Persons' Act, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, the order to be suspended provided that arrears are paid. For polluting the Otaki Eiver with .sawdust, Eobert Isbister was fined 405., the prosecution being at the instance, of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society's ranger. Several old age pensions were renewed, one refused, and a fresh one granted. A widow's pension was also granted. Prior to the commencement of Court business on Friday, Mr. Eobt. Staveley as the oldest member of the local Bar, congratulated the magistrate (Mr. A. D. Thomson) on his appointment-to the Civil Service Board, while later in the day the Licensing Bench also took the opportunity of congratulating him. At the quarterly meeting of the Licensing Bench on Friday transfers of licenses were granted in respect to the PaekakaTiki and Shannon Hotels,' while a conditional license was granted to J. Truman for the Waikanae race meeting. While Miss Lewis (district nurse) was in pursuance of her ordinary duties on Friday she had occasion to cross a paddock, and in passing a gate foil and broke her arm. She was some distance from assistance, but was discovered by a motorcar, which luckily contained a doctor. Mr. B.'J. Staveley has been appointed solicitor to the Otaki Town Board, while Commissioners M'Kogg, Brown, and Skerman have been appointed to apportion accounts, etc., as between .. the Head Board, County Council,: and Town Board. It has also been decided to apply to the Government for a section of land owned by tho latter and now lying idle, as an endowment'whereon to erect suitable offices. It was decided that the board meet on the first Thursday in every month.
