CARE OF THE PIG.
SANITARY-MANAGEMENT '■.-.-■■■ ESSENTIAL. Farmers, in many parts of the North Island are, and have been for some time, giving increased attention to pig-rearing, but in too many cases the pig does not get the encouraging treatment ho should.' .That any old quagmire is good enough for him is frequently the idea, but to secure the best results, which mean ' the 'most profit to tho farmer,,sanitary handling of pigs is of vital importance. A. study of this one point has made tho difference between high success and dismal failure in very many casss. It is argued by. some that tho pig is naturally a clean animal, and whilst not prepared to agree 'entirely with these people, it is undeniable that the. cleaner his. house,. troughs, and general surroundings are' kept, the batter he' thrives. Fresh water in good ■ quantities should be supplied every day, the ideal piggery- being one having a stream running through it. Too often the pig has to rely.for his water on some stagnant pool or swamp water. If farmers throughout tho country would give the "sanitary consideration of. pig-raising more, study, the percentage of. loss" would l bo reduced and the credit. balance increased.
