The British l&wu tennis players opened their tournament to-day against New South Wales. The attendance, which totalled 2000, included tho Stats Governor, Lord Chelmsford, and Lady Chelmsford. Tho weather Was extremely muggy and warm, and tho court had been affected by rain, overnight and in tho morning.

The best display was given by Horace Rice and Dixon, who reproduced their Melbourne struggle, though tho result was different. OUiorwiso the play throughout tho afternoon was disappointing.

15. L. Jones (New South Wales) shaped creditably ngn/iust Lowo (Britain), and tho young Australian's back-hmul work was noticeable. Lowe's best winning stroko was a forehand cross-court drive, but ho seemed to bo lacking in condition, and tho heat affected; him. Lowe won o—l, o—B, o—2. '■ 1

Tho Rice-Ddxon. match was contested with great keonrnMs, and Dixon was evidently anxious to avciigo his Molboufno defeat. Rico displayed liis usual activity, but tho amount of running about the court ho was compelled to undertake ■in order to cffcct fine saves produced its cffect at tho finish. Itico, who was tiring badly, lost two games. Dixon's placing was judicious, and ho made many beautiful half-volleys, (hough a number of his shots vrero inaccurate. Dixon won, 5-7, G—2, o—l.

Parke end Lowo (Britain) played 6. Wright and A. B. Jones (New South Wqles) in the double l ;. All played below form, and though the match was closely contested and prolonged ; t was uninteresting and poor. Except for a few "flashes of smart play, inaccuracy marked tho play of all four. In this match Parke and Lowo won, 7—5, 9—ll, G—4.
