"LAID IN FOR CHRISTMAS." (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, December 6. . In tlie Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. L. G. Iteid, S.M., Thomas B. Lee was charged with a breach of the Licensing Act, in keeping liquor for sale in. a NoLicense area. It was shown by the prosecution that the defendant, who had tlirico previously been convicted, had procured eight, dozen of beer from the Taratahi Hotel, and gave 110 satisfactory account of its disposal. For the defence, it was urged that the liquor was being "laid in for Christmas," and in view of the fact that two brothers of the defendant were coming over from Canada. His Worship did not consider the excuse a sufficient one, and sentenced defendant to one month's hard labour. Mary Carrig was granted a summary separation against her husband, in the Magistrate's Court to-day, on the ground of cruelty. For purchasing liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, Thomas Carew Elers was to-day fined 20s. and 7s. costs. Alexander Reside was fined a similar amount for inciting Elers to procure liquor. A Christmas fete was held yesterday m connection with tho Masterton Congregational Church, and proved a most successful function, A buggy driven by C. Welch, and occupied by two women, several children, and a man named Neil, went over an embankment at Opnki through the horso shying. The occupants of 'tho vehicle had an exceedingly narrow escape. Neil sustained several cuts about the legs, _ and the women and children escaped with a shaking. The fine weather of tho last few days has been taken full advantage of on surrounding stations, anil sheaving is being actively prosecuted. Wagon-loads of wool are now pouring into the local railway station. The Masterton Bowling Club defeated Martinborough in a Booth Cup match yesterday, hi 11 coitttai' •
