PROSPEROUS TIMES AHEAD.
' While we in/New Zealand have been playing the. role of almost disinterested spectators, of. the • war between/Turkey, the, Balkan States, and Greece, the Issue is actually 'one of very great moment to-this country. Most people' probably recognise that we are directly 'affected by the dearness of money, which is partly due to the war., Apart from the immediate financial "stringency, the Government has had to exercise extreme care in the matter of public works expenditure* owing. to the fact that it has yet to .raise the public works loan authorised last session; It is hot anticipated that Me..Allen will experience:any great difficulty in making the necessary financial .arrangements, when, he goes to London, but the Government have shown a proper caution in refusing to commit themselves uhtjl. .they know that the money 'is available. European complications' may arise and affect the London money market to an, embarrassing degree, but' fortunately, despite tie somewhat disquieting activities Of Russia, Bigns are not wanting, that an' early.''ending ofithe-w-ar-and ah. amicable*Js^ttlern'ent , of' the; terms of peace''may bo arrived, at. New Zealand interests..are.,affected by. the war in other, ways than by 'the increased difficulty bt loan "raising on reasonable terms, Tto speedy and. satisfactory; ending .of • the .war would have,a material effect oh British trade. A cablegram. from London yesterday conveyed the intelligence that British trade and.industry, despite the, war, is enjoying a period of uiibbundea .and unprecedented prosperity, and that directly peace is assured iheire.isexpecte'd to be considerable' activity on the Stock Exchange. The ; prosperous times prevailing:iri; England are're;' fleeted in the prices offering for but 'produce,, and tlie greater and, more lasting that prosperity is the better the outlook.for this Dominion, As : a.matter of fact, the prospects ahead of New, Zealand at the moment are 'extremely bright,, and the only cloud on the horizon of any real moment is. the possibility. of complications arising out of the present war, which may embroil some of the Great Powers. . Otherwise, the outlook is full of promise. The high prices prevailing for our primary products seem likely to be, well maintained; and the prosperity amongst the farmihg_ community will make, itself felt in the Various avenues of trade and-indus-try throughout the towns.
