WANGANUI JOTTINGS.

(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanpanul, December 3. Local bodies, having: jurisdiction' in country districts, continue' to have great difficulty in obtaining labour foi road works and . contractors, beiii» in the same predicament, several important' contracts are going begging for want of tenderers. At the Waitotara. County Council's monthly meeting it was - reported that some, contracts, quite"close to Wangauuii had not brought torth. a single contractor. One of the contracts, only about 10 niiiai out, -had been'hung up.-from this'cause for close on two years.- It was ..emphasised at the meeting that this state,of things existed at the time when the Lnboiir Department reported, conditions . as being slack for labourers in Wanganui. AVord has been received by the Wangauui Education Beard, 1 from the Minister, that the disestablishment of the Wanganui District High School will take effect as from the end of the year. This means the transferring of the secondary, department to the Teelmic'il College, which will, in consequence., receive a considerable'accossion in numbers. :

Disappointment and surprise were, expressed at the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last evening when a letter was read from the PostmasterGeneral intimating that the construction of the telephone line from Wangariui to Raetihi had teen postponed. Tlio reason given was that it had been found that the distance was" too great for the earth circuit line, and that a metallic circuit would be too costly. Members stated that it looked'as if the Postal Department was going. back on its promise, and that it was ti remarkable thing that the above objection liad only just been found out. It was resolved that fnrthei) strong representations be made to. the Department on the matter.
