MONTHLY MEETING. Messrs. C. Jones (acting-chairman), T. Ballinger, T. C. Duwson, P. W. Manton, A' , . Leig'hi Hunt, were present at the monthly meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce held jesterday afternoon. . . ■ ' The bank certificate showed a credit balance of .£33 10s. id. Discussion of tho question of a direct service between New Zealand and Hull was deferred for consideration to a larger meeting of the council. Mr. T. C. Danrson moved: "That tho secretary submit a monthly list showing tho ruling export values of staple exports, so that tho values in quarterly returns can be based on the same instead of the present system of checking the completed returns." Mr. Vickery explained that a quarterly return was at present prepared by the Customs Department, and that after--it had been prepared, figures wore submitted to him (Mr. Vicftery), who checked them by calling on the leading exporting firms, and any alterations which ho suggested were duly made. Mr. Dawsou stated that as a matter of fact the request for tho value of staple exports monthly had been made by a high Customs official. As Mr. Mnbin, tho chairman, was absent, and was interested in the matter, he would- r ask that consideration of the motion be deferred until the next meeting. During the meeting, Mr. A. Kayo, of Christchurcli, who represented the Chamber at the International. Congress of Commerce at Boston, read a report on the congress (a precis of which was forwarded by telegraph from Christchurcli).
