TRAINING CAMP.

"A" COMPANY, STH REGIMENT, ON THE MAECH.

Under perfect weather conditions, "A" Company of the sth Regiment, with Major .Beere in command, are ,at present undergoing a three days' training camp. .'As the hour was late on arriving at Takirau on Saturday, after a strenuous march over the Makara Hill, and owing to darkness, it was decided to pitch camp for the night. The fording of the Ohariu stream, which was in flood, proved a very exciting incident to both the officers and men, but, in spite of difficulties, the baggage and 'equipment was safely forded across. Much to the credit of the experienced drivers, Corpl. Johnson in- charge.' The transport was safely taken, over some treacherous country. Lieut. Roberts, coast defence supply ami ordnance officer, was iu charge of the commissariat and transport. -

The travelling cooker was , in commission, for ■ the first time, and soon ample proof of its efficiency was demonstrated. C'ookiug was commenced on the brow of Makara Hill, and 011 reaching South Makara dinner was ready for eating, and was kept in perfect condition until served at the camping ground. The rations served consisted ot clear soup, roast beef aud mutton, boiled vegetables, boiled plum pudding and jam roll, Tea was served at 5.30 a.m.; breakfast at 8 .a.m., consisting of porridge, sausages, aud cold meat; dinner, roast beef and mutton, plum pudding, jam roll, and blanc mange. At 2.15 to-day camp will bo 6truck, and a move will bo made 'to Johnsonville, where the company will remain until this evening.. The tea will be cooked en route, and may-be halted at any point as ordered by the officer commanding the company. ■ The training is being carried out under the supervision of Major Deere, Lieut. Richmond (Imperial staff), pud Lieuts. Stocker and West. The commissariat staff being Lieut. Roberts (in charge), Q.M.S. Sharp, and Sergtl Caiueron.
