COW-TESTING FIGURES.
THAMES VALLEY EXPERIENCE. A report prepared by Mr. W. J. Byrne, testing officer for the Thames Valley Dairy Co., makes interesting reading for the dairyman. . The report says: .' . "The season has been an exceptionally good one from a dairying point of view, •and it can safely be contended that the cows were in a favourable position to. do their best. During the season 2078 cows were tested, and the various creamery districts were represented .in number of cows-as follows:—Netherton, 671. cows; Matatahi, 315; Hikutaia, 273; Paeroa, 267; Wharepoa, 167; Waitoa, 145; Turura, 95; Komata, 75; .Manawaru, 32; total, 2078. . The following summary will show the vast difference, in producing power of some of the cows and herds:— , , ■ ' Butter-fat. .-'■■. ■ .' lb. Average association cow 242.45 The best herd averaged 308.79 The worst herd averaged 10G.58 The best 20 herds averaged 251.67 The worst 20 herds averaged 181.88 The best cow gave 547.36 Tils worst cow gave : 40.89 The 10 best cows averaged 437.12 The 10 worst cows averaged ......... 80.81 "There verc 11 herds above the average of the whole association. There were over 50 herds below the average association cow. ■..■''. "Thetcost of testing, including the testing outfit-to members, worked out at 2s. 7d. per cow, or 9d. per cow, for the outfit, and Is. ldd. for the testing work. Two shillings and ninepenceis a sa'fe basis to work from in an association of 2000.c0w5."
