. 4 Yesterday was the 68th birthday of the Dowager Queen Alexandra. The Hon. F. E. D. Bell arrived in Wellington from Nelson on Saturday evening. Other Ministers in town are the Hon. W. Fraser, Hon. A. L. Herdman, and the Hon. W. H. Herries. The Prime Minister is still at Auckland, the Hon. J. Allen is at Dunedin, and the Hon. F. M. B.' Jb'isher, the Hon. E. Hcaton Khodes, and the Hon. Dr. Pomare are at Christ church.

The Hon. J. Allen, Minister for Defence, is to be entertained at a public dinner in Wellington on December 11, prior to his departure for England. Admiral Sir George King-Hall has signified Us intention of being present, and it is also expected that Mr. Evelyn French, organiser of the Overseas Club, iv'll? be at the dinner. Among the other guests •will be the Hon. R. M'Nab, and Mr. A. il. Myers, former Ministers of Defence. The Rev. L. H. Fenn, the nevlvappointed curate of St. Mark's Church, Wellington, arrived in Wellington from London on Saturday. Mr. Fenn. is accompanied by Mrs. Fenn and family. After having visited his brother in Auckland, he takes up duty at St. Mark's, beginning on Christmas Day. Mr. A. Pullon, of Messrs. Dalgoty and Co.'s Christchurch office staff, who has been on a visit to England, returned to .on Saturday. imi Mr. W. Michael, of The Dominion literary staff, was, previous, to his marriage last -week, presented by his confreres with a handsome silver tea service. The editor, Mr. C. Earlc, on behalf of the staff, made the presentation, and referred in complimentary terms to . the esteem in which Mr. Michael was held by his associates. Mr. W. ! F. Gruar, of Wellington, was. a passenger from London by the lonic, which'arrived hero on Saturday.. ' Mr. .William Thompson Churohward, solicitor, Blenheim, was on Saturday admitted as a barrister by the Chief Juetice (Sir Robert Stout), on.the motion of Mr. T. Young. ' Mr. F. J. Mouat, solicitor, of the Dunedin Land Office staff, will be a candidate for election to the Civil Service Board of Appeal to be constituted under the nonpublic Service Act. Mr. Mouat was chairman of the sub-committee sot up by the Dunedin Civil Servants to revise the Hon. A. L. Herdman's Public Service Bill when it was before Parliament. Mr. J. Macmillan, deputy manager of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company at London, arrived here by the lonic on Saturday. Dr. B. Moorhouse, of Christchurch, returned by R.M.S. lonic on Saturday. Mr. E. Balcombe Brown arrived in ■Wellington from London by R.M.S. lonio on Saturday. • The Rev. Walter Dunkley, of Christchurch, returned .to New Zealand on Saturday, after a visit to the Old Country. Dr. J. C. Simpson, who has been appointed assistant medical officer at the Porirua Mental Hospital, was a passenger' from London by R.M.S. lonic. At the office of the Public Health Department, Auckland, on Friday,.a presentation. was made to Mr. William Galloway, who for some time past has been an inspector attached to the Department, and acting on behalf of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board in that capacity. Mr. Galloway has purohased a farm at Rangirirl. . Mr. Evelyn Wrench, organiser of the Overseas Club, will remain in Auckland until to-day, when he leaves for the Wnikato. Subsequently he will visit the North Auckland district, and will then proceed to Wellington. Mr. E. J. Gravestock, manager for the Kirkby Lunn Concert Company, to arrive in l Wellington this evening, came to Australia as assistant manager for the Quinlan Opera Company. Ho has had a long experience in the business, having toured ot different times with Ellen Terry, Sousa, Kreisler, the Chemiavskis, the London Symphony Orchestra and Mr. John M'Cormack." , Mr. B. C. Gilford, of St. Andrews, South Canterbury, has been appointed stationmaster at Ngahauranga.
