THE CLUB NEWS AND NOTES,

November SO—Opening Worser Bay Club. Decern of Manly swimmers. December 7—Wellington Centre's Car- . nival. December 7—Opening Maranui Surf dub. : • What Weather? • The end of November and the baths practically -deserted! Now that the season has commenced, it is hoped that this incredible state-of affairs will end, : and that the baths will find their capacities taxed straight away. Weather and water have been all against anything but occasional butterfly dashes, and each change of the conditions has been eagerly Watched by swimmers deprived for the time being of their almost natural morning and afternoon dips. Events of the Coming Week. Now that the season has been formally opened, matters, ought to liven up somewhat, Local swimmers are keenly discussing the coming Sydney team. To show their enthusiasm in. a practical way, swimmers phould make their presence felt at the Te Aro Baths' on Saturday next. The oentre has drawn up a good programme of events, and it is to be hoped, that the entries will be in keeping with the programme. "Tod" Solomons and his party, who are to compete in the handicap events,'will start off scratch, and this fact alone should be responsible for 6ome close finishes. The champion _ diver of Sydhoy. is also to give exhibitions,

A F,cw "Splashes." The Ladies' Seagull Club commenced life-saving classes last Tuesday, and it is expected that a number of -ladies will presently gain their: awards. . The Eoyal Life-Saving Society is arranging with the Clyde Quay School Committee for the use of a class-room in which to hold life-saving classes. Swimmers will, do well to attend these classes and learn the methods of aiding others in the water. These methods should be universally 'known,' and the society, deserves every encouragement in its good work. The Maranui Surf Club, notwithstanding the wretched' week-ends, always manages to get a. good _ roll .. call,'. and arrangements are well in hand for the opening day on December 1,. when it is expected that the Mayor and city council-, lore will be present to witness exhibitions of the olub's work. A splendid life-saving squad is in training during • week-ends, and two others on. two nights of the week. It is unfortunate that this club's opening day clashes, with the centre's.function, at. the baths, but the secretary reports that the arrangements, have gone too far : to admit of a postponement being made. The Lyall Bay Surf Club has informed the City Counoil that it has opened its surf-bathing season. This club should do well during the coming season if. ! they work in the right way.. The newly-formed G.P.O. Club is going strongly, and has. already got two races off. The ' G.P.O. has , some first-class material to work on, and great things may be expected of it in the near future. AVorser Bay Club, which opens its season to-day, is plodding along, and a good season is anticipated. The work of this club in. the past is sure to draw swimmers, although the conditions of swimming at the bay are hardly so good as at the baths.

The executive of the Wellington Centre is to ask Mr. I. Buchanan to fill the vacancy of the oentre's delegate on the N.Z.A.S.A. Council, caused by the resignation of Mr. T. Bain. It is regrettable that G. , Parnell is unable, owing to a Tecent operation, to take up swimming, as he would like to do this season. Ho promised well last season, and should have made his mark this year. . The Wellington Club held a meeting last evenin" to arr'ango the season's programme. Two years ago along with other clubs this club made an effort to. .popularise long-distance swimming, and met with a certain amount of success. It is hoped that the committee will continue their effort in this • direction. .

The Swifts Club has already drawn up an attractive programme whion will'carry them well into mid-season. Proceedings commence on Tuesday, December 10.
