AMBULANCE DAY?

THE OBJECTS OF THE ASSOCIATION. : To-day }s Ambulance Day, and the. following explanation may .be of interest to those who are not acquainted with its object. The St. John Ambulance Associa-'' tiori is part of a world-wide and ancient order, the Order . of St. John of Jerusalem; founded in the eleventh century, at the time of the crusades to provide, hospitals for the pilgrims to Jerusalem. Today, the scope of the order is much widened, and contains various branches of activity and influence. In Wellington there are three .branches in operation. There is the St. John Ambulance'.Association proper, for the dissemination of' knowledge in home nursing, and "first aid" to the injured, and for transport of sick and injured; There is the St. John Ambulance Brigade, for the organising and training of those who possess a knowledge of first aid, and home nursing, so that .they may render service to humanity in peace and in war. There is also the District Nursing Guild of St. John, which provides nurses for.the sick poor.in their homes. These various branches cannot be carried on without funds, which .. are. dependent upon' voluitaß' r finihci^ l & , u^i^rt.-'.' i .Tile collections i 'to-da'y"'are"' ; tb 'be! equally distributed among the general' fund of the association, the. association's fund for building quarters, the Ambulance Brigade, and tho Nursing Guild,. Which, while possessing a contributed fund for present permanent expenses, requires assistance to provide comforts and extra expenses in connection with the care of the sick poor. In extending facilities for general knowledge, in first air and home nursing, in attending .to the proper conveyance, of sick and acoident cases in fostering brigades for. ambulanoe aind nursing work, in supplying nurses and comforts'for the sick poor, and, in its efforts to provide a suitable establishment for its headquarters,' the association can fairly claim generous support from the public, for whose benefit it exists. To-day there will be an opportunity for all who approve of such high objects to show their appreciation.
