NEW POST OFFICE SECRETARY.
MB. .W. R. MORRIS. The Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes (Postman ter-General) 6tated last evening that he would recommend Mr. W. R. Morris (As-sistant-Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department) for the position o£ Secretary, vacated by Mr. D. Robertson, who has been appointed Public Service Commissioner. The appointment of Mr. Morris has not yet been ratified by Cabinet. I'urthor promotions which, will follow upon the elevation of Mr. Morris, the Postmaster-General stated, had not yet teen finally considered. Mr. William Russell Morris was born at Dublin in 1853, and educated at Beetive College. After serving in the accountant's branch of the General Post Office at Dublin, he came to New Zealand in 1874. Arriving at Lyttelton in that year, he entered the Postal Department as. a money-order clerk, and was transferred to Wellington in 1879, to Christchurch in 1882, and to Wellington again in 1884. In 3891 he was promoted to the position of senior clerk, and later became assistant controller of money-orders and savings bank. In 1906 ho was made controller and accountant, and in 1907 As-sistant-Secretary. Mr. Morris was a founder of the Post and Telegraph Rifles, which company ho commanded for some years. He retired from active military duties prior to the initiation of the new defence scheme.
