A letter received dn Auckland from Now South Wales indicates that in tho country districts the trials of the Australian summer are worse this year than usual. In addition to the heat and dust tho summer has brought with it a groat plague of flies, and in the Eiverina and the western districte, the flics are so bad that it is impossible to venture abroad without iiy veils. In some of the country towns these veils are not procurable, and people are compelled to wear green garlands round their hats and pieces of cork dangling on string from their hat brims. Even so, cases are reported of people being bitten and 6tung almost to a stato of blindness, and two specific instances are mentioned in which horses were so maddened by fly bates that they had to be shot.
At last meeting of the Harbour Board a deputation from the Wellington waterside workers waited upon the board, and asked to be allowed to assume full control and management of the men's wait-ing-room, and to exclude from the room all but members of the union. The question was referred to the Wharves and Accounts Committee, and the committee last night recommended the board to' re.tain the control and management of the men's waiting-room and to suggest to the Waterside Workers' Union the advisability of forming a committee to assist the wharfinger in maintaing order. This recommendation was ' adopted by the board without discussion.
