MR. WILLIS'S SALARY.
. THE ESTIMATES REVISED. PUTS HIMSELF DOWN FOR A £500 RISE. UNCOMPLIMENTARY REMARKS. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Rec. November 26, 9 p.m.) Sydney, November 26. The Legislative Assembly has had another protracted sitting on the Estimates. The Parliamentary Estimates as revised by the Speaker, Mr. Willis, included an increase in his own salary i'rom .£IOOO to .£ISOO, an increase of .£l6O for the' Chairman of Committees, and new items o! .£IOO each for the Deputy-Chairmen of Committees. As Mr. Willie was out of the Chamber, the members made the most of their opportunities for untrammelled criticism of his occupancy of the chair. They characterised his Speakership as a reign of terror, and himself as "an impertinent, tinpot tyrant," "the bowdleriser of Hansard," "a freak," "a heaven-born organiser," and "a political bandit." ■ Mr. Lonsdale, member for Armidale, 6aid he thought the people associated with the Speaker ought to get higher salaries because of the indignities they had to suffer.. Eventually- all the proposed increases were negatived on the voices.
