FEATHERSTON CHEESE FACTORY.
4 — (From Our Own Correspondent.) There were a large number of visitors present at the 'Feathcrston Co-opentive Dairy Company's factory on Friday, to inspect the recent additions to the cheese factory and the newly-erected plant for the manufacture of butter from wheycrcani. Prominent representatives of other dairy factories in tho district were also in attendance, amongst these being Messrs. W. Fisher and B. M'Laren (Toratahi), E. Eagle (Belvedere), A. Knudsen (Dalefield), J. Jolly (Tawaha), Coleman Phillips, a pioneer of co-operative dairying in the \V'airarapa, and J. Moncriefi, of Carterton. The company's cheese factory is capable of dealing with 6500 gallons of milk per day, and the plant for wjiey-separation is of the latest pattern. Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., in proposing the toast of "The Dairy Industry," outlined the development that had taken place of recent years, and showed the great importance of the industry in its wealth-producing effects. He mentioned that the State Dairy Division would be stili further administered for the benefit of farmers, and he had been assured of an early improvement in the facilities for carrying dairy produce on the railways, which up to now had not been satisfactory. He was of opinion, too, that ocean freights could well b9 lowered, and still leave a profit to shipping companies. He congratulated the directors of tho company on their enterprise in putting in tile first whey-separating plant in tile AVairarapa, and wished the venture every success. Tho toast was' replied to by Messrs. Coleman Phillips, J3. Eagle, W. Fisher, and A. Knudsen.
Mr. Geo. Yule, chairman of directors of the Feathcrston Company, said that the butter they wero now making from wheycream should be worth from lid. to Is. per lb., and on that basis ; would return a handsome profit, without materially affecting the feed-value of the whey, which would still contain about 5 per cent, of sugar. He urged upon farmers the necessity of supplying- only first-class milk, to enable the best butter to be manufactured.
Other toasts were: "The Contractors," uropo-cil 1-iv Mr. A. J!. Will"''vmi, and "The Staff," by Mr. A. E. O'Neaie. The visitors were hospitably entertained by the company.
