AMATEUR ATHLETICS. THE CHIEF GOVERNING BODY. GENERAL MEETING. The annual mooting of tho council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held in the secretary's ofiico last evening, the president (M,r. A. Marryatt) being in tho chair. The delegates present wore: Messrs. E. L. Chaffey and M. 11. Oram (Canterbury), J. C. Cusaek and I'. Crouch (Otago), A. Davios and A. Marryatt (Southland), C. E. Bridge and F. J. Thompson (Auckland), W. I'. Larkin and U. A. Guises (Wellington). Chairman's Remarks. In traversing the annual report, tho chairman stated that tho association did not pay sufficient regard to tho schools and colleges. They lost sight of a great proportion of those lads who compete in tho collego sports. He would like to impress on tho council the necessity of endeavouring to enlist tho sympathy of the teachers in this matter. The chairman then referred to the Canterbury school championship, which was held last vear, and was a great success. Ho understood that tho arrangements in connection with this championship were carried out solely by the teachers, and he went on to say that it prove a very valuable thing if the school teachers throughout the Dominion were approachcd, with tho object of inducing them to get the boys to bike nfr the athletic sp6rts and form clubs. If the association had the assistance of the teachers, and if tho various centres would take the matter up, ho was quite certain that success would result. The chairman then referred to sports amon;st territorials. Ho had been assured of the

support of General Godley, who had stated that all sports meetings in connection with the territorial sports would be tarried out on An amateur ba*is. Passing on to mere general matters, Mr. Marryatt «aid that, in New Zealand, it was a very ureat necessity to have a uniform amateur definition. The awoeiation did not require a man who could'appear in one sport as an' »m&t«ur, and in another as a proffMional. In conclusion, he was pleaded to s«t that the asroci&tion's relation! with thfc Zealand Athletic Union wer« of » very friendly naturt. Other Sp«ekers. Mr. Gtiisj gpoto in support of th» chairman's remarks regarding schoolboys bein/; *thl«t«. The association should eninronr to encourage centrea to organise >a school championship. _ Mr. A. Davie? also expressed the opinion, that the centres should use their best endeavours to havo a schools* association formed.. A schools' association had onco been in existence in Hawke's Bay, and it had for a time been very successful, but for some reason it had subsequently fallen ■through. ' The balance-sheet showed that there had been a loss of ,£2B owing to debts being written off through clubs being defunct. He would like to know if it was' not possible to make clubs pay their subkriptions in advance. Mr. J. F. Thompson was against sunporting the scheme to provide for funds to Send athletes to the Olympic Games. He thought that the money could be better expended .on fostering athletics in New Zealand. lie was also of opinion that the association was going beyond tho spirit of amateurism by training" men to compete on the other 'side of the world. It was moved by Mr.-Cujiick. and carried:—"That the association notify centres that certain clubs were unfinancial, and request that they have no representation on the centres until their subscriptions are paid." Officers Elected. The election of officers resulted as follows President, Mr. A. Marryatt; vicepresidents, Messrs. C. E. Bridge, and J. C. Cusack; hon. secretary and treasurer, 1 Mr. W.'- G. Talbotion*, auditor, Mr. C. D. Morpeth; F.P.A.; Reinstatement Committee, Messrs. B. A. Guise, W. F. Larkin, and C. E. Bridge. Wellington Gets the Championships, A somewhat lengthy discussion took place in committee as to which citv the Now Zealand championships would be hekl in. It was eventually decided to hold them in Wellington. On condition that tho Blenheim Club became affiliated to the association, their application for reinstatement of a number of athletes is to be granted. H. H. Whitaker, -of Invercargill, wis granted reinstatement 1 as from January 1, 1913.. R. E. W. Fordliam, of Auckland, was also granted reinstatement. Mr. T. Crouch intimated that he would be pleased to donate u. challenge shield for schools' competition. The Visit of American Athletes. Tho council discussed the question of the proposed visit of on American team of athletes ,to Wellington. According to a cable message received from San Francisco, the team is to leave that city on December 11, and is due to arrive here on January 2. Tho cable messago was from the manager of tho team,, and he suggested the following names for the association's approval:—Horine or Richards (high jumpers), Forest Smithson (hurdler), M'Clure (middle distance), and a sprinter (not named). The chairman expressed approval of the names mentioned in the cable message, and said that ho was,of opinion that Horine was the man they wanted in preference to Richards. _ If Ilorino was unable to ■ make the trip, the association could then ask Rose (a discist) to make the trip. _ Tho team would on arrival probably visit tho south and north, and, roughly , speaking, their tour of New Zealand would take a full month. Mr. Bridge thought that it was desirable to get Hmino if possible. A number of-the centres had (in reply to letters received from tho association) made offers of guarantees for the team's visit as follow:—Wellington, £G0 and half-profits of a meeting; Masterton, .£3O and half profits; Southland, J!SO and half the profits.. Otago also approved ef the proposed visit, but. stipulated no specific amount of guarantee. The chairmaniToentioned that the team would leave San Francisco under the auspices of the Am erica n . Amateur Athletic i Union, and their .visit to New Zealand j would be under- tho auspices of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic. Association.

It was decided to. cable to Mr. TJnmack (manager), agreeing to accept the team, giving preference to Horine, and accepting him (Mr. TJnmack) .as manager of .the team. '

It was suggested that an arrangement might bo made whereby tho team could visit .Australia, but it was decided to leave that question in the hands of the

sub-committee, which was elected as follows:—Messrs. A. Marryatt, C. E. Bridge, B. A. Guise, and tie. secretary. It'was stated that if the team did propose to visit Australia, that country would be asked to bear part of the cost of the Americans' expenses. The cost of the trip has been calculatcd by. tho association at about .£3OO. BROKEN HILL CARNIVAL. ' By Telesra-ph—Prow Association—Copyright Sydney, November 25.
