The Sydney mail steamer Wimmera reached Auckland yesterday in time to connect with the overland express for Wellington. The mails will arrive in town this'afternoon.

A very slight'shock of earthquake was felt in Wellington at about a quarter past seven yesterday morning.

Before leaving Wellington Lady Islington presented last Thursday a challenge cup for a shooting competition amongst the Senior Cadets of the Dominion.

St. Peter's troop,of boy scouts, under tfyeir officers (H. S. Myers, H. C. Lloyd, and R. Bennett) sjjsut an enjoyable outing on Saturday afternoon, on a visit to H.M.S. Cambrian, and were entertained by the officers and men. At tho conclusion of the visit tho boys gave'three hearty eheera for the officers, and they returned to town at 5 o'clock.

Petone, during the last week, has been tho scene of a number of petty burglaries. At 8.30 a.m. yesterday, 'the 6hop of Miss Smith, on the .Hutt Road, Petone, was broken into. Tho window was smashed, and a 9lb. box of confectionery, valued at 10s., was taken. The police are investigating the affair.

, Mr.' AV. IC. Skinner, Commissioner for Crown Lands, informed a "Marlborough Express" representative on Wednesday morning last that "the safety of "i'suras Jack" is now beyond all question. Mr. Skinner was told by Mr. Nelson, who for forty years has been engaged m fishing in thfe Sounds, that he saw "Jack" only recently at the head of Pelorus Sound. Ho was quite certain it was the cetacean, as he is intimately acquainted with hiru, and when seen he seemed to be in good health and spirits.

There were 63 candidates at the confirmation service held yesterday in St. Paul's Anglican Pro-Cathedral. The iddress delivered by the Bishop (Dr. Sprott) was from the text. "In your purity ye shall win your souls."
