0 PAHIATUA COMPETITIONS. Pahiatua, November 21.. The entries received for the Pahiatua second annual musical and elocutionary competitions are distinctly gratifying,, the number being considerably in excess of the total received for the inaugural gathering. The total is over 100, as against 120 last year. The competitors, besides local talent, are. drawn from Wellington, Mastorton, Woodville, Eketahuna, Palmerston North, and Mangahao. The competitions will commence on Wednesday, December 4, and will be continued till the following Friday evening. The jndgo tor the elocutionary section will bo Mr. T. L. Buick, of Wellington, and Mr. H. E. Gunter, of Palmerston North, will adjudicate in the musical section. POST OFFICE OPENED. Auckland, November 21. The formal opening of the Waihou. Post Office took place to-day by the Hon. W. H., Herries, ' Minister for Hallways. There was a large attendance of settlers and visitors. The Minister was entertained at a banquet in the evening. SUPPOSED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Waodville, November 21. S. Taylor, a shoemaker, recently arrived from England, who was in business here, was found this morning on the floor of his shop, with two gashes in the throat, supposed to have been self-inflicted. He was taken to the Pahiatua Hospital. He has a wife and family, and had been doing well. CANADIAN CADETS. Auckland, November.2l." SHUNTING ACCIDENT. Rotorua, November 21. . Guard shunting at Mamaku yesterday, had his pelvis crushed-between a truck and tho platform. He was brought to the sanatorium. His condition is unchanged so far. OLD AGE PENSIONER'S DEATH.. -: Irivercargill, November 21. The body of an old age pensioner named Thomas Ladd, aged 07, was found in Cruickshank's Bush, two miles from town. He had left his homo, on October 8, and all efforts to traco him failed. The body was in an advanced; stale of decomposition, but was identified by papers in the pockets cf the clothes. ...-■", FATAL, TRAP ACCIDENT. Christchurch, November 21. An inquest was' held to-day touching the death of George Alloway, injured in a .trap accident near Ashley bridge on November 12. The.police statement was that deceased was' in a gig and was thrown out when the- h'orso bolted. A verdict of accidental death was returned. CHILD SWALLOWS A PAPER-FAS-TENER. . Christchurch, November 20. .An inq uest was held this morning touching the death of" Lizzie Alwa- Britt, a child of five years. Tho coroner returned a verdict that death was due to occidental asphyxiation caused by the child swallowing a paper-fastener. A BEE FARMER'S DEATH. Christchurch, November 20.This afternoon the coroner held an inquest concerning' the death of Harold Henry Parreott, thirty years of a-sfe, a bee farmer,. of Tai Tapu. Information had been received by the police to the effect that the body of deceased was found in a hut, the head being partly blown away.by a gunshot, apparently self-inflicted. The man • had evidently- been dead some ten days. COAL DEPOT~AT~RAROTONGA. Auckland, November 20. . A scheme for the establishment of a coal depot at Rarotdnga was brought under the notice of the Hon. Dr. Pomare to-day by Mr. D. Aeneas M'lntosh Murison,. barman at the Clarendon Hotel, was arrested last I night on a. charge of supplying a certain drug to a woman with intent to procure abortion. BREAKING AND ENTERING, Auckland, November. 20 v Ed°-ar Lansing Huston was again in Court to-day charged with breaking and entering the Hikurangi Hotel. Accused was found guilty and sentenced to four years' hard labour,. concurrent with the previous sentence. WANGANUI POLL. . Wanganui, November 20. Tho ratepayers to-day carried proposals to raise .£30,000 lor gas-works extension, and to amalgamate Wanganui East with Wanganui Borough. A- proposal to raise ,£20,000 for a destructor was negatived. The Wnng-anui East ratepayers voted in favour,of amalgamation, ond carried tho loan, proposals. POISON ACCIDENTALLY TAKEN. Christchurch, November 20. Mrs. Clara 11. Fraser, about 49 yeare, of age, residing at Woolston, was admitted to the hospital to-night suffering from the effect* of poison, accidentally taken. She was in ft semi-con-scious state, and was atill as nt a late hour. Her condition is considered critical. The r/oison taken was a linamont prescribe "for external application for kidney complaint. FATAL FALL FROM A TREE. Invercargill, November 20. A young Maori named Korua Una. met with'a fatal accident at Rouudhill on Tuesday. He was up n two engaged in limbing it, when he slipped and fell to the "round. Ho sustained very severe injuries, and death resulted. Deceased was working in connection with a sawmill-i in th-'j district. It is understood that his j relatives reside at Moeraki. '
