NEW DIRECT CABLE.

SYDNEY TO AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, November 20. The laying of the new direct cable from Sydney to Auckland is now proceeding, and the cable steamer Silvertown is expected to reach tho Now Zealand coast on Saturday. The Postmaster-General (the Hon. R. H. Rhodes) forwarded the following cablegram of congratulation to-day.— "Postmaster-General, Commonwealth of Australia, Sydney. ' I send you heartiest congratulation on tho commencement- of such an important worlc as the new cable between Australia and New Zealand. The additional facilities it will give, I feel sure, will help to bind together our countries, not only in business- connection, but also as links in tho great Imperial chain."
