Maughan Ikrnett has been, appointed president of the Auckland Society of Professional, Musicians. Tho Hon. Wm. Pitt, architect for the new Manners Street Opera House, leaves for Melbourne by the -Maunganui to-day. Ho will bo represented on the Works by Mr. Albert Liddy. ' Mr. W. Fordham, of the Public Trust Office staff, leaves on a trip to Sydney by the Maunganui to-day. The flag over Messrs. Johnston and Co.'s warehouse was ilown at half-must yesterday, out of respect for the late Mr. Samuel Taplin, whoso death is reported from Palmcrsloii North. Mr; Taplin. has been a traveller in the employ of the firm mentioned for about thirty years, for the greater part of that timo on the West Coast of tho North Inland, where he was well known and highly respected. He leaves a widow, six sons, and a daughter (Mrs. F. Maxwell Lcclcie). A Press Association message from Sydney states that Sir William M'Millalv, after rovoral years' retirement, will return to active politics.'
