UNHAPPY MARRIAGE.
WIFE USES A REVOLVER. M. Penot, an assistant schoolmaster in tlie municipal school ' at Fontainbleau, married a few months'ago Mdlle. Eliso Noirot, who was a schoolmistress, but at the time of her marriage without a position. It was' not long before tlie couple began to quarrel. ' The wife reproached her husband with having concealed from her tho«fact that he was in debt. Tho sum was not a large .one—iß—but Madame Penot objected to the monthly disbursement of 125., for the debt was being paid by instalments. M. Penot, on his side, • accused his wife of neglecting the house-keeping. * On more than one occasion,- after a particularly violent scene, Madame Penot had left her husband, and returned to her parents.- On June' 1 she weut to Paris and purchased a revolver. How-, ever, somo sort of peace was, patched up between tho pair, though on the wife's part •it was an armed neutrality. _ In July they went together for the holidays to the house of M. I'enot's parents at Montarlot. In the beginning of September M. Ponot, who was an officer of reserve, went to take part in the grand manoeuvres. While on service ho received a tlireatening letter from his wfl'c, in consequence of which, on his return to F-ontaincbleau lio took up his quarters at an hotel. After a fow days, however, he resolved to make a final effort at a reconciliation. ' Early in the morning ho entered the diniiig-room of his house, and' found, his wife. . Without a word or greeting Madanio Penot pointed to several letters'and newspapers lying on tlio table, and as her husband stodped to pick thorn tip she fired four shots at him-.. One of theni, struck the schoolmaster behind tho shoulder, grazed the lung, and camo out at tho right side. M. Penot, who was not teriously wounded, made for tho window, and leapt out. A few seconds later a second shot rang out. Thinking that slio had wounded her husband mortally, Madanio Penot had committed suicide. Her bodv was found lying near the window close to the tabic overturned by her fall. Tho bullet had pierced the brain, and must liavo proved lalal. M. Penot's wounds givo no'occasion lor anxiety.
