2000 GUINEAS FOR A BULL CALF. Tile record price of 2000 guineas was paid for a bull calf at Collynie salo on October 8 last, when the shorthorn sales in the north were commenced by tlio disposal of drafts from the famous herd of Mr; William Duthie, and also from the well-known herd of Mr. John Marr, Uppermill, As last sear, Diithio's draft of bull and heifer calves were sold at Tillycairn, and Mr. Marr's at "Uppermill. The attendance of, breeders was as usual representative of all parts of the country, and despite the TestrictioDs many buyers wore operating . for the export trade. With, a good home demaud, says the Dundee "Advertiser," the salo was one of the best ever held at tlio worldrenowned centre of shorthorn breeding. The sensation of the day, remarks the samo paper, was tlie bidding for Collynie Cupbearer, a'magnificent dark roan calf, of true shorthorn.type and great gaiety of carriage. \He was got by Merry Stamp,' and out of the Queen of Eothes dam. Proud Queen, by the 1000 guinea, sire Achilles. Scaroely had ho entered the ring when a bid of'soo came for him. Mr. Joseph Lee, Congalton; Mr. Wallace, of theHdgecoto Shorthorn Company; Mr. Duncan Stewart, of Millhills, and Mr. Casare3 were all in the running, and 1000 guineas, was called in a twinkling. Still the figure mounted up, and at 1900 guineas the Perthshire- breeder was in, but . Mr. Casares went to the 2000 guineas and secured him. The onlookers witnessed the spirited contest with amazement, and' Mr. Casares was'heartily' cheered for his plucky fight. The 24 calves offered by' Mr. Duthie made the very. excellent average of i£377,85. 7d-., which has only been twice beaten in the history of, tno Collynie sales, and on .both occasions the numbers exposed were smaller. The dozen heufer calves from Collynio .made the very good average of ,£71165. 9d. Mr. Cornelius paidi77 guineas for Proud Augusta, by Princc Jubilant. The best price for the females was 360 guineas, paid by the Hon. Claude Porta an for Rosewood Girl, an April calf of beautiful colour and type.
