THE CHURCH AND THE WORLD.
Sir,—"What shall we do?" was a question asked by Mr. Gibson Smith\yesterday. The same question was asked of Peter and the Apostles; but how different were the circumstances. Then the people had seen God's mighty power manifested through the Apostles, and were awestricken, and "pricked in their hearts." Now, we send our boys to college to learn" to be "ministers"-arid unbslief and faithlessness is the result,. .We have the promi.so of the same mighty power, but it is withheld on account of lack of faith.' Tho answer to Mr. Smith's question is the samo as of old, "Repent and be baptised every, one of-you." The lawless ones, shepherds and sheep, must either bo converted or be dealt -with in the way God has appointed. It is shocking to learn that tho' Church has-so far forgotten herself as to "appeal to- the workers." What "communion hath light with darkness? Also, it is useless to deplore the fact that "hundreds of, men entertain'fio real interest'in'the'Church," for what concord hath; Christ with Belial ? And here l let me' say that the Chmch is not the clergy—Col. 1-24—un-less it is the Church of Rev. 3, 15, 16, that is referred to' by the committee. Let the.committee study Col. 1 and 2 and measure up the clergy with the standard tliert laid down.. The remedy for the present condition of affairs lies, not in "making a study of economic questions," but. by making a'study of God's Word, finding out what the will of tho lord is, and doing it. Let them brush aside the traditions of men, men's ' brotherhoods, pleasant Sunday afternoons, church parades, and .such like shows; get into divine order, and "speak not as pleasing men, but God, which- trieth tho hearts." —I am, etc., OBSERVER.
