FOR THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
THE NEW SCHEME 01? PHYSICAL . TRAINING. .- (By [Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, November 18. In an interview to-night, the Hon. James Allen gave further particulars of the physical education scheme to be introduced into primary schools of the* Dominion. "It has already been announced," Mr. Allen 6aid, "that Mr. Royd Garlick, of Wellington/has .been appointed by the Government director of physical education. He will have directly under him a staff of .eleven male and seven female instructors, some of whom, I may say, will be obtained from the junior cadet instructorial staff. These instructors and instructresses will in turn instruct our primary school teachers until the system becomes proficient. Auckland will probably have two members of Mr. Garlick's staff stationed in the city. The scheme proposes," Mr. Allen continued, "that almost every hour of the sohool day children will receive two or three minutes physical exercise, consisting probably of, breathing exeroises. 'Whether the junior cadet companies are to remain will rest entirely, with "the various education boards and the schools themselves. Under the new regulations, it will bb quite voluntary for a. school to retain its cadet corps, whioh may be instructed in military drill just as they are now. This, however, will then be taken up, besides the physical drill." The scheme, which is Mr. Allen's own idea, will be in working order by the time the children return to school from their Christmas holidays.
