The "Now Zealand Nautical Almanac and Tide Tables for 1913," which lias come to hand much curlier than usual, is a work well up to the standard of previous issues. 11l addition to the general information of benefit to mariners, the 1913 volume con'tains supplementary information to date relating to the -last edition of the "New Zealand Pilot." j Some very valuable nautical tables, and examples of. problems worked by their aid, have been published in this year's almanac, which it is hoped will greatly encourage masters and officers generally to mako a practice Qf determining the sliip'« position from two stars at twilight, as these tables mako the problem -very easy, and also enable tlio observer to make sure that lis is taking the right star by the easy calculation of the approximate altitude and bearing of the star. It should bo known to the nautical community and the country generally that they, as well as Captain K. S. Blackburnc, editor of the "Now Zealand Nautica' Almanac," owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Charles Westlnnd la Canterbury runholder, who is at the same time an enthusiastic expert in the science of nautical astronomy) for his disinterested, gratuitous labour during tlw last six y-jars in patiently making several hundreds of the calculations for the compilation of the star reduction tables. A few other previously published tables useful to mariners and travellers generally have been reprinted, including a table giviii" the approximate times of the meridian passages of 108 of the principle fixed stars. This table lias been calculated with groat care for tho year 1910, it includes several more stars than are given ill the standard nautical .works; and .» new departure has been tnkon In giving tho to:

ferior as well as the superior transits of circumpolar stars. , . A. conoise chapter on the Winds and Weather in New Zealand" lias been written by the Rev. D. C. Eaten,. Director ot •the Meteorological Office, and wcaihor reporter for tho New Zealand Go\ermuont. Mr. G. Allport, secretary for the Marino Department, has given n short summary o, the principal now provisions and '"nendmeuts contained in the Nqw./.oaland bmpping and Seamen Act, 1909, the Shipping and Seamen Amendment Act, 1910, and tho Shipping anil Seamen Airjendment Act, 1911. NEW THING IN SHIPS. An entirely new departure in ship design will shortly be seen afloat in tho shape of a corrugated cargo steaniei. This vessel, when snbmoi'Ked to her loauline, will havo very much tho same appearance as an ordinary "tramp, but wnen in ballast she shows beneath her loan- | line a double corruption of her Pmy? 3 ' two outward bulges with a corresponding I depression between. These bulges run out ! at bow ond stern, and merge into the ordinary lines. . , Anybody who lias handled a. sheet or oorrugated iron knows that he may eofels' dance on it while it is supported only at tlie ends, and that under tho same conditions the uucorrugatod sheet may be depressed with a forefinger. Precisely on this principle tho corrugated ship gains in' strength by her curved sides. one exposes more surface, to the water, and, according to the laws of resistance as hitherto expounded should need more driving power. In practice it is said she has been found, however, to renuire less power to attain a given speed than ordinary ships. Also, by reason of her strengthened hull, she is enabled to dispense with many tone of dead-weight in hor frames or' ribs; while the stringer-plates, or longitudinal frames, .are practically done away with. This gives her a roomier, hull, and enables hor to carry considerably more cargo than the normal ship. It is claimed for the new typo of steamer that vibration is praotically eliminated, and that she is particularly steady In rough seas. Thus far only one corrugated steamer is actually in being, but her trials have proved so ' thoroughly satisfactory that orders for glx others to be built aa rapidly as possible liavo been given. ' WAIWERA FROM MONTREAL.' An arrival in port from Montreal, via Australian ports and Auckland yesterday, was the Shaw-SaviU steamer Waiwera. The vessel, which berthed at Jervois Quay No. 16, Is running under charter to the New Zealand, Shipping Company. Captain Charmon has associated with him the following officers Chief, Mr. A. C.
