March b—Ladieis' itace. .[ To-day's Functions, To-day the opening of Wellington's yachting season is to. take place, and it is, to be sincerely hoped that fine weather will prevail; Club members, and particularly the officials, seeiii to be very en- ■ thusiastic, and are doing their utmost to make the affair a success, The secretary of tho P.N.Y.C.'. has issued, invitations to yachtsmen and .their ; friends.-. Tho sea* son is to be declared open by tho Mayor of Wellington (Mr. 1). H'Lnren) at, 3.2S p.m., the procession of,the yachts anrl launches will take place off the Clyde Quay Wharf at 3.30 pirn. Afternoon tea, provided by the Port Nicholson Yaeht Club, will be served in Shea 46, in iivo Boat HaiTjour. The Wellington Cruising Yacht Club, the Te Aro Sailing Clllb, the Motor Boat Club, the Heretaunga Boating Club, and probably the Te Rutu Sailing Club will join in the'procession. For the event the.c-hairiuan of the combined clubs delegates 'A;. Petherickj lias issued tho following lnstructionsr— The P.N.Y.C., the P.N.M.8.C.,' the W.C.Y.C.,. tho T.A.S.C, and the H.B.C. boats will, assemble near to tho' flagship at the Ferro-concrote .Wharf, and his . 'Worship the Mayor will declare the seaBon open at 3.25 p.m., from the flagship, by the firing of a gun. At 3.30 p.m, boats' will form a procession in order mentioned 1 below, and if a northerly wind, will : proceed to and around tho Jerningham buoy, thence to and around the ManTpWar buoy, thence to and around a mark boat off Taranaki Street Wharf, and thence past the flagship, saluting her in passing by dipping the flag flown afc the' mast-head of cach • boat taking part in the procession. Immediately after passing the flagship each boat can do as she pleases as the official opening is-termin-ated at this stage. If a southerly wind, the procession will proceed to the Man r n'War buoy, thence to Jemiogliam, thence to the flagship, saluting her in passing, as for a;, northerly wind, and dispersing, The order of proocssion is arranged for each boat taking pajrt, but if any boat is absent, the other' Mats wili close up, keeping the same order as set'out. Launches will lino up between, say, uvery three or four sailing boats. The following will be the order of the procession 1, Siren; 2, Naomi; B,'Rofin; 4, Muritai; 5, launch; 6, White Heather; 7, Mahina, 8, Windward; 9, Matangi; 10, launch; 11, Ailsa; 12, Nancy Stair; 13, Kotiri; 14, launch; 15, Wairete I; 16, Evatt; 17, Wylo; 18, Wairere II; 19, launch; 20, lolantne;-21, Lizzie; 22, Iscai 23, Taipare; 21, launch; 25, Viking; 26, ltafreno, 27, Reverie; 28,. After the procession it is probable that the members of the Te Rurti Sailing Club, with their yaohts, Will adjourn to one of the bays, where they will formally open their season. Heard on tho "Hard." , , Mr. GeoTge Hamill, owner of the yacht Ailsa, states. that the engine for his yacht, which was expected early this month, has boen delayed owing to tho vessel which, was bringing the engine out being wrecked. The engine will not now arrive until about December 18, by the steamer Nairnshire. The launch Comet, which arrived at the Boat Harbeur oii Tuesdav Of last week, was built by Mr, C. Bailey, jun., of Auckland, to tho order of the Westport Coal Co., Ltd., for general harbour work. She is 30ft. over all, with Bft. beam, and plenty of freeboard both for'ard and aft. She is to be fitted with a 15-li.p. doublo-cylinder Gardner engine. At a recent meeting of tlie Otago Yaoht and Motor Boat Club, the commodore passed a remark regarding club members not wearing tho club uniform, He re-' ferred to club members wearing red nightcaDS, in placo of the club's neat -cap. The same thing csists in. Welling-' ton, and somo yachtsmen ma.v bo foen wearing any sort of hat.. It is'not right. As the Otago coinmodoro remarks, why not wear tho club uniform, and keep up the old traditions of yachtsmen for neat-. ne='s ? .'
