In response to ■ inquiries; --the Akitio county clerk,has, received the following returns of tho amount paid and received in accident insurance by the. respective .local todies during the past''five years:— : Counties—Wairarapa South. paid £%% .and received '£76; JlauricGvilte paid £7?, received' £!&'}■ Pahiatua paid 4188, recemd ifilS; liasterton paid i 8156, reoeited -Sls; CaStlepoint paid i£lso, received',£s£lO; Akitio jtaid JS&SQ, received JG10; Bketatvuna paid i 9.9, received .£35. Boroughs —Master ton. paid JS4OG, and received J JS7I > Pahiatua, paid £11, received JSi)4. Total paid, total received, JJIO7B. The. Masterton Borough Council recently decided to take its own risk with, refer- . «nco to accident insurance, and the Akitio Council did likewise. As the result, the latter body has nowa, substantial bolancs. in tho bank for insurance purposes. The Akitio -. cDuntj; clerk states that the .amounts received by tha Castlepoiut County Council and the Pahiatua Borough. Council were practically all payments for last year. llt■ is contended, therefore, that the insurance companies mndo largo profits out of tho local bodies mentioned during the pjtfceeding four j-orirs.
