Company of' CtoistcliUrch,' the New Zealand Shipping Oompany has nlaced an order with the Smith Dock and Shipbuilding Company, of Middlesbrough, for tho construction of an up-to-date steamer collier of about 2300,t0ns resister. The vesbol is to be 275 ft. in length. 39ft. breadth, and 18ft. sin. depth, and have triple-ex-pansion engines supplied by Messrs, Richardson, Wostgarth and. Company. The cylinders will bo 21in.,'34itt.. and 56in. by 36in. stroke, with two boilers 15ft. .3in. by lift., capable of .giving a, speed of 10} knots. NEW STEAMER HAWKE'S, BAY. So rapidly is the work progressing now that the Tyser Line,' Ltd., has arranECd .the sailing date of .the new steamer Hawke's Boy.' . ABANDONED, Advices received from Thursday Island state that the steamer Mtndoro had arrived there from Port Moresby, and brought news that, the steAmer Merrlo F.nglnnd had been abandoned. The Mindoro asisted in the efforts to get the Vessel off the reef, but was unsuccessful.. The Merrie England was endeavourijig to enter the passatre between the reefs outside the harbour laft at night on Thursday, October 25, but no lights were showimr, She was evidently carried about a mile out of her course. After she struck the vessel's lead keel came Off, and the bolts which bad been scenting it retarded all efforts to drag her off.
