Tho visit of tho'.hoMers.reprc'soritinßlthe New.'Zealand Bowling' Association. (South Island) to Wellington, on Saturday, was marked by one', of .the best smoke concerts- ever, given in the history' of bowk - irig convivialities in Wellington. The function, which took place in the Wellington. Bowling Club's pavilion, was. an, Important one, as it was tho first occasion on which tho members of the councils of the Northern and New Zealand Assor oiatioiis had met in a bod}', and the indications given in: tho speeches marked fiat the date of the amalgamation of tho two bodies-was not far distant. •' The occasion was graced by the- presence of a number of vocal artists, who contributed in' no small -measure to the success . of ,tho gathering...- These included Mr E /J Hill (who arranged tho pro- : gramme), Mr. D. Konny, and. the Orpheus Quartet Party (Messrs. . aher, Allwright, and Hutton), who submitted a highly-attractive programme of Bon»s and. onartets. •, : ' , i The .toast list was not a long one. Aftei , "The King" . had been .honoured, _the chairman (Mr. T. Barnett (president of the New Zealand Bowling Association) responded briefly, and excusing himself on the plea of being a poor speech-maker, told a hum- ■ orous story with a'good point. ■ ■ Mr; C. R. In regard to the question of amalgamation just about to be consummated, the tour would do more to cement the. friendly | feeling between the. bowlers oi the North and South Islands, and draw them closer together, possibly, tlmu in any other way. •Mr. CJ. Payne (Duncdin), in proposing the health of.'the Northern Bowling '. Ainriati»n,i said that, he'had ahraw found- the members of the Northern Association not only first-class bowlers, but first-class fellows and business men, who ran their tournaments as well as they ran their smoke concerts. -(Laughter.), • . In' responding- to the '? a 4' £ r -,- Keith, said that the Northern Bowling Association ;had just had its twenty-first birthdav, and ho. was proud of the fact that wnen the amalgamation took place they would contribute 5000 members of over. 70'cliibs.' (Applause.) Ho. agreed with Mn Smith that the amalgamation would be the coping stone towards bringing together the bowlers of New Zealand: The toast of "Our Musical Iriends was proposed by Colonel R,,J. Collins, and «- fpondea.to: ! byMr.-E..J.Hill,.and .the. '•Press" was honoured.by Mr W.yeilch. In proposing the health.of the secretary of the Northern Bowling Association, Mr. 'Balk gave Mr. J. J.'Roberts credit for his fiuo organisation - aud capacity for work. He said that if the amalgamation dirt take place • between. the two • associations that the name, of the oldest association in New Zealand (the New Zealand) ™ ul « not-become extinct,- and that Mr. Roberts •would tie the first secretary, of we : new : association.
