Councillors Tineman,''' Cox,'- 'Brockelbank, "Wakeham, List,»and Short were'also present. The council agreed to .co-operate- with the Masterton Council in-its endeavour to "get the Minister for.lnternal Affairs to legalise the sale of coal by municipalities. The Masterton Council liad for the last four or five years carried out the sale of coal to the inhabitants-of Masterton, but this year the Auditor-General took exception to it. A resolution embodyin" the foregoing ,is to. be- sent to the •Minister for Internal Affairs, and to the member for the district. A letter-was received from tjio Secretary of the General Post 'Office,' regarding tho accommodation of the' Petone. post office, stating.that authority had been given for extensive,. additions to provide' increased public space, a postmaster's room, a strongroom, and a retiring room. The councillors considered this satisfactory'; Councillor ' Ladder moved as v follows :— "That for the purpose of regulating *he speed of motor-cars and motor-cycles, crossings be placed at the -inter-sections of all streets along tho Hnt't. Rond from Wakefield Street to the railway crossing, and that notices be posted in suitable places, limiting the speed 'on. tho Hutt Road to 20 miles an hour: in Jacksoii Street to 15 miles au'hour. ,' In support of his motion, Councillor Lodder said that he-thought, that. : tho time had arrived when it was necessary that the motor traffic through; Petone should, be.regulated. It scandalous the way in which motor-cars raced through Petone on race days/ He'thought that if the notices were put upthev would answer their purpose. He was willing to hold his .motion over until the next meeting of-the council,''and' in tho, meantime would give councillors a'demonstration of a motorcar going 20 and 15 miles an hour. The Mayor said that ho would like to see a demonstration before the'motion was passed. He referred to a little book of motor by-laws, used : by the City of San Francisco., One of the by-laws, ho said, prohibited' '-motorists from proceeding -through"a'bus'y street at a greater .speed :.than'■-,ten/'miles -.per hour, and on -city 'streets where' there was not so much traffio atls'milesan':hbur. :: ,.
