The only criminal business was a case ad- • journcd from tho previous sessions against ■ John Vernon Binley, telegraph operator, and Edmnnd John Walsh, grocer, tor conspiracy to defraud bookmakers by tampering with "telegrams in connection with tho Wanganui Tacos. Other counts wcro also preferred against both accused of attempted false pretences, and. ono count against Binley alone of obtaining money under false pretences, and forgery of a telegram. The hearing ocoupied tho whole-day and ovening. David Ross, of Ross and Bradshaw, describing himself as a commission agent, was called. The Crown Prosecutor had difficulty in getting him to answer, and the Judge said: "I know what is in your mind. Tou need have 'no uneasiness. Six months have elapsed, and you need not bo afraid of the information being used against you now. You can answer quite freely." ■ Thereafter witness answered freely as to betting transactions which his "firm had with Walsh, explaining methods and code telegramsl Henry Martindale, of" Scott and' Martindalo, another commission agent, waj similarly reassured that he need not fear prosecution under the Gaming Act, and also freely gave evidence. The case is unfinished., ~ CONTEMPT OF. COURT. JUSTICE OF THE PEACE FINED. , Auckland, November 8. J. H. Hannan, J.P., appeared before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., charged with contempt of Court. Tho Magistrate had instructed a man employed by Hannan to produce a book containing certain accounts. Hannan told Nash he need not , do so. Hannan disclaimed any intention to -insult tho Court, but maintained' that tho Magistrate had no right to insist upon tho production of a private document. • The Magistrate'said that to tell Nash; in the''face'''of Court that ho need' not produce a book ordered to bo produced by tho Bench was an insult to tho Court, which could not bo passed over. ' „ , Mr. Hannan said he would withdraw what he had said. Mr. Kettle declined to accept an apology, and imposed a fine of X 5, in default soven days' imprisonment. Mr. Hannan promptly paid the lino into Court, FURNITURE TRADE. Auckland, November 8. Matters in tho furniture trade dispute aro' at a deadlock. In tho South , the awards provide a 44-hours' week and Is., id. an hour. Tho Auckland hours are 47 and the pay Is. 3d. an,hour. Attempts havo been made to got Auckland to join in a Dominion award, as it is alleged the manufacturers here aro competing unfairly with tho other parts.
