Mr. .George" Harwood, Liberal M.P. for Bolton, is dead. > Mr, Harwood (states the "Pall Mall Gazette" House of Commons handbook)was a. Bolton cotton-spinner, who was al6o at one time an ordained deacon. He was born at Bolton in 1845, and left Owens College, Manchester, to travel, and then settled down to business, But, having taken part in the foundation 'of the Church Reform Union,' be was,ordained in 1886, and acted as a. curate for three years, retaining his lay dress, title, and business all the time in the hope thus to set a precedent for the widening of tho diaconate. After his curacy, he was called to the Bar at Lincoln s, Inn. As lawyer and churchman, Mr. Harwood had strong qualifications for his appointment as a Royal Commissioner on Church Diseipli&e in 1901.
