STUDENTS' CQMPETITIONS, PMZO LIST AND JUDGE'S SBMAB.KS, In the past the New Zealand Academy competitions havo been held in conjunction with the annual exhibition. As. however, they ore really e. alasa ajwrt, and there has never been sufficient room to exhibit th,em properly, the council wisely decided this year to show them in tho maia. hall of the Art Gallory after the annual exhibition, instead of hanging a few of them in the ante-room as heretofore. The works sent in form an interesting display, oud fill the gallery. They have licea judged by Mr, D. A.R.C.A., art master at the Wangamu Technical College, who has used sound and oompctent judgment in the task allotted to him,. The exhibition, will be open to-day,.- and on, Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., amd there is no charge for admission, The following is a list of the prizewinners, with the judge's remarks on the workr*Life and Antique Drawing and Painting, Class 2.— Study of head from life in H. White. This woTk is- good in tone) though might have been, more direct in handling.. Class 3—Study of human, figure from nude model, to be accompanied by. memory drawing of the same figure, of same size-'-Nelson Isaac This drawing shows good line, and the memory sketch shows grip of pose. Class i.— Set of time sketches of ntide figure in action (time to be stated)— Nelson Isaac. Also highly commended. The work which obtained first prize was the only one that suggested movement, the others being too stationary in pose. However, most of the work woe of high standard, many of the figures being freely drawn atad good in line. Class 7.—Set of studies of hands and feet from life, in black and _ white or monochrome—M. Green. This' drawing shows very good construction and feeling of bone and museio. Class B.—Study of antique, in black and white or monochrome—A. E. J?enlty and. Annie M. Gibb... Very highly commended. The first award is an excellent treatment of the antaemft with the point. Both, works wxxtfld have shown 4 to greater ad-' vantage had-they bean lighter in toil©; in fact> all the work in this section was much too blaok. Anatomy. Class M.*-Set of. anatomical studiesMary Green. Nelson Isaac commended. The last-named ° would have gained first place had it conformed with the regulations, it being a- very artistic Tendering. Animal Drawing. Class of animal studies, especially aiming at movement—E. Key worth. Drawing expresses good character; being very true to life, and shows, sincere study. Nelson Isaac, highly commended. This student gained a prize in a similar classlast yfear, and therefore is not again eligible. His eet of sketches shows good treatment with the pencil,, and general good character in the. positions of the animals. Landscape or Seascape. Class 12—Study Of detail pf landscape ot seascape—E. Dawson. This work shows very careful and searching: drawing. N. comniended. , Well modelled and good in character. ' v Class IS.—Study, of landscape' or, seascape in Dawson. This work ehows a .brood treatment,, and is good in colour, H. Strong, commended. Somewhat woolly and tqo "pretty" in colour. Plant Form. Class 11.—Study of native plant in blaqk and white--M. Beetham- . Jessie Colley, The work awaided first prize showed a very good, sincere, and sympathetic, treatment with the pencil. The second, award was a delicate and dainty drawing. - V .- .. I SHU Life. |' Class 16. Study of still life-in colour : -Cams Patson, 1; J. Hobart, 2; D. H. White, 8; P.. Wilson highly, commended. The first award in this oTasa was excellent in relief and good in colour. The work awarded second place was'a strong drawing'in water colour,, though ■ lacking a little in freshness. -The. third award Was made for a fair rendering of a difficult subject. '-~■■•'. ■ .' Class 27. ' Stencilled.. hanging, designed and executed by exhibitor—All the ex- ] hibits in this class.were crude- in colour.; Although the work' awarded the prize was satisfactory in arrangement,, it .had I the look of a table cloth rather than a hanging, which' should have weight at the, base. . 4 Class 88. Embroidery, designed.and executed by exhibitor-Lilian Bole, 1. This class givea a wide scope, but students did not avail tnemselves pf the opportunity. ■ Class .29, . Wall-paper design based on native plants-Florence' Pritchard, 1. Most of the exhibits were too strong in cot our and small in .repeat. However, the, first award showed moro knowledge of i what is required in designing wall paper. Glass 30. Leather work~As there weroi no entries, the judge arranged a class for damask design, their being, a number of works submitted, the .'first ftward being] gained by Beryl Macßeflzie. . i Class 31. Motal work,:.designed and executed by exbibitof-'K. M. Alcorn, 1. This work was noticeable for its simplicity. Class 32. A piece of jewellery, designed and executed by the; exhibitor—Francis Hughes, 1. The work Was simple- in design and good in colour.. Class 33. Enamelling; designed and executed by exhibitor—No entriesClass 34. Wood carving, designed and executed by exhibitor—Harold' Green, 1. Tie panel for which tho student was awarded first prize showed good modelling, and it is evident he can manipulate the tools in a proper manner. Modelling, Class 41, Model design based on a native plant—Lois Thane. 1. Mary Green, highly commended. The panel which gained tho award was well massed, and showed good relief, the contrast between the leaves and berries being very happy. The panel for which the second award was made miglit have shown better grouping. Extra Classes Added for Pupils tif Wellington Technical School, Class 43. Head from antique in round. This w.as well worthy of a prize, as it" was -plastic, in feeling and well constructed. Class 45. Details from life—The ankle is treated well, and. shows good construction and feeling of bone, vera Hill, 1. Class 4a. Drawing of head from life in.black and white—Nelson Isaac, 3. This shows good treatment With the point.
