JERSEY BREEDERS.

The following official report of a meeting of the Council of New- Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association is supplied. Present'.—Messrs. W. M. Tapp (Auckland), . chairman, R. J. Linn (Normanby),' J. A. ■ M'Crea (Stony Creek), P. E. Watson (Palmerston North), A. H. Halcombe (Urenui), W. V. Harkness (Tariki), W. H. Booth (Carterton), and J. C. Lane (secretary). .A report was made on the progress of the semi-official test> of Jersey pedigree stock under the Dairy Division Department of Agriculture, there being over 120 .entries up to the'present. > The allotment of three 17-guinea sterling trophies for competition at the Hamilton,' Stratford, and Auckland A. and P. shows was confirmed, and the selection of same was left with tile secretary and Mr. A. M'Crea. New members elected were as follow :— Mrs. Annie Banks and Son (Kiwitoa), C. 10. Chisnall (Richmond, Nelson), Egmont Dickie (Waverley), .1. L. Hauna (Paeroa), Prank Mourie (Manaia), Miss H. E.) Maclean (Aorangi), T. E. Robinson (Whangarata), Jacob Thorklesen (Tariki), G. T. Yates (Parengarcnga). ' Somi-official Testing. • ■ ■ Mr. D. Cuddie, Director of Dairy Produce, attended in reference to semi-official test and coirs'attending shows. The matter of procuring a standard milk, scale for the weighing of milk''ill rail official milk tests was discussed, and it was decided to , order.some for use by the association. A letter was received from the Pranklin A. arid P. Association applying for a trophy, for competition. Trophies for this year having been arranged, the application was held over for consideration till next year. The question of selling grade Jersey bulls was considered on a remit' from Stratford branch as follows-.—"That the attention of the council be drawn to the fact that a number of members of-the association are breeding . grade Jersey bulls and selling them as such', which practice is very detrimental to the Jersey breed, and that the association be asked to devise' some means to stop the practice." It. was' resolved that a circular bo sent to each on the lines of the resolution and that the council's disapproval of the practice be recorded and notified in the circular. In reference to the suggestion from the iassociation to the'A. and P. associations ■ that, as a means of education in Jersey classes,, a. young Jersey breeder accompany tlio Jersey judge while judging, the Hamilton, Hawera, Stratford, and Aucklam Associations wrote their approval of the idea. ' • ' It was resolved that local branches bo requested to send in suggestions regarding the proposed alternative, of the rules by Deoomber 1. • ■ The following was added to the Herd Book rules:—"That the legal representative of; any deceased member 1 may, provided the subscription of 21s. is paid, within one year after his or her death, register at member's rates or transfer any animals owned by snid member at time of his or her .decease, or that may ne dropped within said year from animals so 1 owned." On the motion of the president, it was resolved to submit the following to. the Minister for Agriculture: "{seeing the economic production of butter-fat is the fundamental principal of successful dairy; ing, the Council of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association ask the Minister for Agriculture to nrrnnge that the Department in charge of the experimental farms institute a system, of records for purebred dairy stock, whereby not only a milk and butter-fat record is kept, but also the cost of keep and the class of food consumed is staled. That the details be published in the iournal of the Department of Agriculture." A local branch of the association was arransed for in South Auckland district, and Mr. C. Day was appointed convenor. At June 30, 1912, the total number of registered pedigree Jersey stock in tho Dominion was 1806 bulls, 24M cows. • The following official tests _ for seven days, were received and certified to by the usual sworn affidavits from the supervisors and testers:— Mr. P. C. Anderson's (Carterton) "Lady Garibaldi," age 2 years !) months, calved .Tune 10, 1912, tested September 27 to October 5, 1912, result, 221b. milk, test 5.2. 11., Mb. butter-fat. ■ Mr. P. S.' M'Bae's (Stony Creek) cow "Charm," age 4 years, calved September 9, 1912. tested October 10 to 10. 1912. result, 2901b. milk, test, 5.4, IS.GOOIb. butterfat.

THE HAWERA SHOW. •ENTRIES CLOSE ON SATURDAY." Intending exhibitors at the ITawera •show are reminded that all entries close on Saturday, November !). Whilst excellent entries arc coming forward in every section it is in cuttle that there will lie a particularly good display. With the competition for the Ayrshire and Jersey championship medals, awarded by the respective breeders' associations, the display in these elates should be a very iino one. The secretary is now in eomraunication with the KaiHvay Department to make arrangements for a stuck train from down the coast to pet through in one day, which will make a considerable difference to those exhibitors well down the coast. Entries for the butter-fat competition close to-morrow, November' ■7, and for dairy produce and all other clashes on Saturday, November il.
