Owing to the heavy rain on Holiday, several slips have occurred on many of ■ the back roads, and .the local Road Board will be put to expense, in clearing away the debris, and repairing wash-outs. One of the bridges at Jlanaknu was • threatened by water, and part of tlie approach was undermined. The Otaki River, for a time, was running fairly high. Various creeks overflowed their banks, and several settlers were almost flooded out, quite a number .having to vacate their houses, ilr. Kershaw .sustained a loss by having a largo number of fencingposts, etc., washed away. While the rainfall hero was nearly two inches for u few hours, it was heavier on the hills. .Tho rainfall at. lieikorangi for the month of October was S.iii) inches, the heaviest fall (1.21 in.) being on the 2ath. llaih fell on eighteen days.
