John Barker , and Co.'s drapery and general stores in South Kensington were partially burned .at an early hour this morning. . ' E The lives of thirty girls were imperilled,'! and there were some thrilling escapes. . Three are dead, one being dashed to tho pavement from tile fourth .story* Eleven havo been taken to hospitals. Later, There were softie heartrending scenes at the flre. The heat Was so intense that further attempts at rescue wero mclde impossible. .-' Some of tho girls leaped' from the "windows to tho pavement, and were seriously injured, Ono girl who- was rescued 6aw , four .of her companions perish,. . ■ Eight of tho girls are still missing, and their case is considered hopeless, Four of those taken to the* hospital havo succumbed .to their injuries. The building was gutted,.
