The facts admitted wero that tho fireman deserted at Lyttelton, and the Captain and chief officer. scoured Westport in an endeavour to find a substitute, with the result that they only heard of two drunken men, and neither was located. The magistrate held that the captain had' used every'ieasbna'ble effort, and no penalty was imposed. <\ ■ LAUNDRY FATALITY. Tlmaru, November 1. A young man named. P. J., Collins, em? ployed at a ttcam laundry, fell backwards while carrying clothes on October 3, and hurt his head. He was in tho hospital till October 20, and when ho returned home he still complained of pain in the hood.: Yesterday morning he died unexpectedly. CANADIAN CADETS. Ashburton, October 31. Tho Canadian Cadets arrived.from Timaru by the early train this, morning, and were welcomed 'at the station by the Mayor, • leading citizens, local cadets, and a crowd of. two hundred people.
