'■■* .'Niuafu is an outlying island of the Tongan Group. It is volcanic, and there was a serious ernption on it in 18SG. At tho same tiine' the.Falcon Reef, in the group,, w'hich is normally awash at high water, discharged .sufficient pumice and scoria to form a new island 50ft. high. By 1898 the island had been washed awoy. From'lßls to 1857 volcanic eruptions were frequent in the group, and islands once fertile were devastated and almost destroyed. A ".new island rose from . the sea, and was at once named "Wesley," but disappeared again. ;
